Thanksgiving is approaching. Pumpkin bread, corn pudding, turkey, and stuffing galore! You can visit with family, go Black Friday shopping, and just relax. These are many things to look forward during this special holiday. However, what comes with family are the questions they will ask you— the awkward, sometimes unanswerable, and annoying questions. After your family arrives at your house and come through the door, you are in prime territory for the third degree.
1. Are you seeing someone?
This is probably the most asked question. You either lie or give in and respond with a straight answer. It just depends on whether or not you want to ditch out on talking to an uncle or you want to make your grandmother's day.
2. So, does that mean you are boyfriend/girlfriend?
You may have bought your special friend to your Thanksgiving. Well, you learned the hard way. He/she/they may be getting the third degree too from your eager family.
3. And if you have a special someone, they may ask: Have you thought about marriage?
Wow, that's a heavy question. Right now, you are focusing on college, not wedding bells. You may just laugh it off. Or scream.
4. And if you don't have a special someone, they may ask: You know, my friend's son/daughter goes to a university close to you, maybe they are single? I can set you up!
No! You don't want to be set up while you are still in college. That's just awkward. Especially with a family member. Maybe when you turn 30? I think I would partake in online dating before succumbing to "family approved future spouse."
5. Remind me again, what are you studying?
Of course, if you don't have a major in the health professions or business, they may give you a hmmm... which is the obvious sign of disappointment.
6. And of course, the follow up question: What do you want to do with that?
Time to panic. You probably have no idea what you want to do. Who does? And that's ok!
8. Wow, you look great! Did you lose weight?
It may be months and months since you have last seen them. And what does it even mean to look "great"? I feel like I haven't changed at all!
