Everyone recalls the time that they first heard one of their favorite childhood fairy tales take on a much darker tone. Suddenly, the naivety of childhood seems to vanish, as the morbid story unfolds, telling tales of wicked stepsisters slicing off their toes, or a young girl and her grandmother being devoured by a deadly wolf, only to be cut out of his stomach with scissors and saved.
These gruesome stories were written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm during the 19th century, and contain a variety of grim themes including murder, suicide, and cannibalism. They will be retold at the Knowledge on Tap event by Wayne State Professor Donald Haase at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 16, at HopCat Detroit's Huma Room in Midtown.
Haase, a professor of German and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University, will be able to delve deeper into the tales of the Brothers Grimm thanks to his extensive background in German literature, as well as his Ph. D. in comparative literature.
Knowledge on Tap is a bimonthly event that takes place in various restaurants and bars throughout Midtown. The events are described as being “live—and lively—discussions with some of Detroit’s greatest minds.”
The topic of each event differs as they are chosen by the WSU faculty member that is giving the presentation and hosting the discussion that follows. By allowing the faculty member to select their topic, each event can be given with passion and interest, as well as a depth of knowledge.
All Knowledge on Tap events are free to attend, open to the public, and welcome all ages. Because this Knowledge on Tap event will be held at HopCat, RSVP is requested.
