9 Tips To Beat The Winter Blues

With the record-breaking temperatures over the weekend and the promise of an early spring, it's hard to accept the wintery temperatures any longer. Don't let the bizarre Michigan weather get you down, though. Fight the wintertime blues with these tips:

1. Get more light

Winter is a time for staying inside and snuggling under the blankets trying to keep warm. The sun rises late and sets early, and you usually don't get the chance to take it in when you're at work. This lack of sunlight can put a damper on your mood, making you feel sluggish and even depressed. To combat it, do your best to sit by a window when you can and be sure to open blinds and curtains during the day to let in more light. You may also consider purchasing an artificial sunlight lamp.

2. Exercise

Exercise seems to be the answer to most everything, including the symptoms of the wintertime blues. A study published in 2005 found that walking fast for roughly 35 minutes a day five times a week or 60 minutes a day three times a week had a significant influence on mild to moderate depression symptoms, symptoms that are often found in many people throughout the winter months. Treat yourself to a regular exercise routine to see the best results.

3. Listen to music

Listening to some upbeat music is a proven way to make you happier according to a study done at the Univeristy of Missouri. If you can, have the radio on while you work, or load up some happy songs for the car ride home. The study didn't mention if singing along had any additional benefits, but after watching some Carpool Karaoke, I think it's safe to assume it helps.

4. Plan a sunny vacation

What better time to plan a vacation to somewhere hot and sunny than during a dreary winter day? Just the anticipation of an upcoming getaway can make you feel happier, according to this study.

5. Spend time outside

Sure, it's cold out, and the snow is turning so a muddy slush discouraging anyone from going out to enjoy the fresh air. But if you drag yourself outside, you can see an increase in happiness, focus, and creativity according to Stanford University researchers.

6. Socialize

Even on the days when you feel your worst, push through and spend time with people says Emanuel Maidenberg, a clinical professor, and director of the Cognitive Behavioral Clinic at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles. Surround yourself with positive people and people that make you happy, and you'll shake your sorrows faster than ever.

7. Stick to your schedule

It's easy to hit snooze on cold dark mornings, but it's important to stick to your regular routine to keep you feeling your best, says Kelly Rohan, lead author of the study and a professor and director of clinical training in the department of psychological science at the University of Vermont.

8. Eat smarter

This isn't a lecture on healthy eating, but smarter eating. Chocolate is known to enhance your mood and make you feel happier. Other indulgences like candy or carbs can make you feel better temporarily, but will leave you feeling worse in the long run. If you're in the mood for sweets, opt for a piece of chocolate instead of the handful of gummy bears.

9. Focus on the positive

Complaining about winter and how much you hate the cold will only make you feel worse as the season continues, says Rohan. Do your best to embrace the weather and make yourself feel cozy. Make some hot cocoa, wrap yourself in blankets, and light some candles.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
