Wake Forest has a Multicultural Sorority?

Multicultural Sorority? What does that even mean? What do they do?

Wake Forest has a Multicultural Sorority?

NPC (Panhel), NPHC, IFC ... everyone knows about those but what about the NMGC? The National Multicultural Greek Council, that is.

Delta Xi Phi is one of those NMGC organizations and Wake Forest has their very own chapter!

Get Excited!

On Wake Forest's campus,as well as a slew of other universities nationwide there are several Greek organizations from social to service to business. You could say we've got a lot!

Something that many students are unfamiliar with, though, is the multicultural sorority that's been on campus since December 17, 2011. Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Incis a social sorority that was founded in 1994 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The organization as a whole adheres to five pillars

  1. The Advancement of Women Through Higher Education,
  2. Increasing Multicultural Awareness,
  3. Community Service,
  4. Sisterhood,
  5. Friendship

(our chapter observes an honorary 6th pillar: food!)

Ok, so there's the brief biographical overview of this organization, but what are we really about? And, what do we mean for Wake Forest?

"I'm not mixed or 'ethnic', so I wouldn't fit in"

For starters, Delta Xi Phi (DXP) does not accept or exclude anyone on the grounds of cultural, racial, or ethnic diversity. This is important to point out because so often girls have said to me "Oh. I couldn't be in DXP because I'm not mixed" or "DXP isn't for me because I am 'just white'". There is no specific ethnicity requirement, we are a sorority focused on celebrating diversity and the cultures of the world.

"Yeah, everyone stands for something on paper, do you guys even incorporate your pillars into your activities?"

In planning events, fundraisers, and even recruitment, upholding our pillars is of utmost importance to us. For example, each fall our chapter hosts a thanksgiving potluck with the NPHC organizations on campus as an effort to uphold the friendship pillar by branching out beyond our group, bonding, and having a great time with others on campus!

We are a multicultural organization in that we strive to increase multicultural awareness through events like those we've held in the past such as "Henna Night" or our continued effort in volunteering with The Big Tent: Transforming Race project with professor Finn (If you are unfamiliar with the project, Google it, it's super cool!).

"I've heard you guys are a last resort for the people who don't make it during rush"

For some ladies, we might very well be, but because our sorority is structurally much different from the sororities who participate in rush week, only the girls we are really into our pillars stick around. We don't have "pledges" and we don't participate in rush the same way our campus's NPC sororities do (it's just because we're different, we love Wake's NPC ladies!). We have a completely separate process that involves each current member getting to know each of the potential new members before moving into the official process of joining the sorority. Because nationally we have small chapters, it is important for us to know who all of our members are before they can join.

So, yes, we are a real sorority and not everyone who applies is accepted. It's just that our criteria for admitting girls into our sorority has a lot more to do with finding girls who find themselves aligned with our pillars.

Because we are still a little new to campus, I appreciate you taking the time to read up on who this Delta Xi Phi group really is! See you in the fall!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
