T. Swift has done it again. 1989 was released on Oct. 27 and has surpassed the fastest selling album of all time, Eminem's The Eminem Show of 2002. I'll bet this pissed Eminem off immensely.Â
This album (the Target Deluxe Edition, to be more specific) has been on repeat on my laptop when studying, in my car driving on my forty-minute drives to my internship, on my phone when working out. When I tell you that they have merged together to make one horribly-infectious jumbled up song that is constantly stuck in my head, I am not kidding.Â
I, like many Taylor Swift fans, have very passionate feelings about many of these songs. Here are my thoughts. Take from my opinion what you will, just do yourself a favor and listen to this album and it will feel and sound like you're living on a rainbow surrounded by clouds.Â
1. Welcome to New York. If I'm being honest, I usually skip over this song and get to the good stuff. It's just too much, Taylor.Â
2. Blank Space. This was my initial favorite. Here's why:
a.) There are lyrics that she speaks instead of sings. For example: "I could make the bad guys good for a weekend." These are always the best parts.
b.) She is pretty much taking a shot at herself for having a "long list of ex-lovers" who think she's "insane." Any girl who can admit that is A-okay in my book. We've all had that one guy who gets so fed up with us that he just uses the "she's crazy" excuse.Â
3. Style. Rumor has it that this song is talking about Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles' relationship. It just now occurred to me that the song is not only pretty much his last name, but is also describing him pretty specifically. White t-shirt, slicked back hair, James Dean look-a-like. I like to think that she's saying here that Harry + Taylor = a classic look and Harry + a Kardashian spawn = destined to go out of style. Could have been a little less direct there, T.Â
4. Out of the Woods. I don't like this song either. The repetition really grinds my gears. However, I do like her "two paper airplanes flying" reference and how it's an indirect jab at Harry Styles, who reportedly wears a paper airplane necklace.
5. All You Had To Do Was Stay. I don't like this song. Next.
6. Shake It Off. I don't care if this song comes on an average of four times when I'm at the bar every weekend, plays on the radio constantly, and is incredibly infectious and slightly corny. This song rocks. Even guys like it. She did good with this one. Although it bothers me that it's so different than the rest of the songs on this album....
7. I Wish You Would. This song is pretty cool. It kind of gives me the 80s vibe that I thought this whole album was supposed to be. I think this song would be great as a soundtrack to an angsty 80s teen love story. Cue the boom box outside of the window scene.
8. Bad Blood. This song is really, really good. Kind of weird though. It's about Katy Perry, who reportedly stole one of Taylor's back-up dancers. Imagine if you got in a fight with one of your friends and made up a song like this, it blew up and got super famous. Guess that friendships over. To be honest, though, the whole "bandaids don't fix bullet holes thing" is a little weird. Coming on a bit strong there, Taylor. Peace and love.
9. Wildest Dreams. This song is so beautiful sounding. It almost sounds like a dream, which I'm sure is the point. Also, this song gives me some intense Lana Del Rey vibes. "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful" vs. "say you'll remember me standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe". They'll never forget you, guys. Also, you're both really pretty so that shouldn't be a problem.Â
10. How You Get the Girl. This is one that I cannot get out of my head. This is reportedly about Taylor Lautner but I could have totally just made that up. *Insert other hunky celebrity here* The melody is so catchy, though. But this is a lesson to all men about getting the girl direct from the pro of getting guys. Take notes, gentlemen.Â
11. This Love. This song is so mellow and depressing and sounds like it should have been in a movie like the Parent Trap or something from the 90s. She sounds really weird and auto-tuned too. This mellow vibe is unusual for her and is probably due to a lot of quality time with Lorde.
12. I Know Places. This song is my favorite song. Maybe my favorite song that she's ever made. It's so cool and intense and lyrically awesome. It's so different than anything she's ever done in the best way. The intensity of the song comes out when she screams "and we run." She paints a picture in your head! This song better be in one of the next Hunger Games movies or something. If I were a choreographer, I would totally make up a dramatic lyrical dance to this song.Â
13. Clean. This song is something I wouldn't mind falling asleep to every night. Pretty mellow and talks about rain, which is relaxing. Also, most girls can relate to this. We ALL have a wine-stained dress that we can't wear anymore. Which we can also relate to a guy that we should probably stop talking to. This has a really cool message though, honestly, and is about breaking free from a toxic person. Snaps for that.Â
~BONUS~
So my ultimate favorite is on the TARGET DELUXE VERSION.Â
Wonderland. Is. so. good. and. so. underrated.Â
This would make an awesome music video because it is about an Alice in Wonderland situation, falling down into a rabbit hole and falling into a whirlwind of a relationship that you get lost in. My favorite line is when she says "didn't you calm my fears with a cheshire cat smile." So good. SO GOOD.Â
