Do You Wanna Run a 5K? | The Odyssey Online

If the answer to the above question is yes, then you've come to the right article! This Saturday, October 25th, 2014, Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta are partnering up to host the seventh annual Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education to honor the legacy of the former UNC student body president Eve Marie Carson.

For those of you who aren't exactly sure who Eve Carson is, or what she did on campus, I'll tell you. Born in Athens, Georgia,  Eve exemplified the Carolina Way.  Her dedication to community service and desire to help those around her started in high school and continued throughout her college career before it was tragically cut short.  A Morehead-Cain Scholar and a North Carolina Fellow, Eve's campaign for student body president stemmed from her desire to give back to the UNC community and empower UNC students to actively participate in their surroundings.

More than anything, Eve believed it was her responsibility to represent all UNC students.  As former Chancellor Moeser described Eve at her memorial in Polk Place, “Eve personified the Carolina Spirit…She felt the very pulse and the heartbeat of this university.”

Also at that memorial, former Chancellor Moeser challenged the campus community to honor Eve’s memory by uniting to demonstrate the Carolina Way as Eve envisioned.  And as much as this 5K is about rising to this challenge, it's also about something else.

What made Eve Carson such a great leader and Tar Heel is that she understood how special our campus exactly is.  She knew the magic that is the quad in the spring, the arboretum in the fall, and the basketball team all year round.  She understood the thrill of singing Hark the Sound at the end of a sports game and the bliss of a lazy rainy day lounging in Graham Memorial. Most importantly, she knew that it was the student body and the Carolina community who make UNC what it is.  It is all of us who contribute to that "oh my god I can't believe I actually go here" feeling that occurs every so often walking across campus.

In conclusion, this 5K is not only the call to action former Chancellor Moeser called for, but it's also a celebration of this heaven on Earth town called Chapel Hill we live in!  As the largest 5K in Chapel Hill history constituting of over 1,650 runners and $58,000 raised last year, all proceeds from race day benefit the Eve Marie Carson Memorial Junior-Year Merit Scholarship, Pi Beta Phi's Literacy Fund, and CEO4Teens.

Just as Eve strived to better her community, we strive continually to raise more money to donate to these charities every year.  So whether you look like this when you run:

or this:

Come and support this wonderfully enchanting university and event at 9:00 a.m. in Bynum Circle by registering for the race here! And always remember, Go Heels, Go America, and Go Eve Carson Memorial 5K!

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
