25 Daily Thoughts Of A UMass Student

For a school as big as the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with students coming from 48 different states and 50 different countries, we students all think alike as we go about our daily routines around campus.

1. "This walk to class counts as my exercise for the day."

FitBit fanatics as well as the rest of the UMass population know it is no challenge to reach your daily 10,000 steps when walking around a campus this size. Have a class in Northeast? No need to go to the gym. This thirty minute walk to class from Southwest was enough for me.

2. "This campus is so big, how do I still manage to see you everywhere?"

For a school with 22,000 undergraduate students, it is astonishing how often you see the same faces every day. Everyone has that one person you see everywhere, no matter how often you switch up your daily routine, and we can’t help but wonder if they notice us too. So next time you see that same cute boy in the dining hall, know it’s not a coincidence, it’s fate and you two are destined to be together.

3. "Should I go to Berk or Hamp after class today?

Always Berk.

4. “Disconnect your wireless printer or die.”

Eduroam is already as unreliable as the iPhone weather app, we don't need to make things any more difficult.

5. “We are blessed with our dining hall food.”

Being among the best campus food in the nation provokes high expectations when it comes to dining hall food for UMass students. We can't imagine having anything but the best, exposing our inner snob when we go to visit friends' colleges.

6. "Is the construction on campus ever going to end?"

The new South College by the library, the Old Chapel and the construction near the Morrill Science Center, seems like new structures are popping up left and right every day on campus.

7. "I hope they have the good fries at Berk."

I'm sick of this "healthy" local hand cut farm fresh BULLSHIT!

8. "I know you from somewhere, but where?”

That uncomfortable feeling when you see a familiar face walking to class but can't remember where you know them from. Did we talk at a party last week? Are you that person that posted in the Facebook group every day this summer?

9. “That squirrel literally came two inches from running over my boot.”

The infamous black squirrels of the University of Massachusetts are the school's unofficial mascot and they are no where near shy when it comes to scurrying around the campus. Just go about your business and the squirrels will do the same.

10. “Am I walking past the library, or am I in the middle of a vortex?”

Some days it is near to impossible to walk past the library without feeling like the wind will pick you up and fly you backwards.

11. “Why haven’t these geese migrated to the South yet!?”

There's nothing quite like the loud honks coming from the geese during your walk past the center of campus. And we can’t help but ask, why haven’t they gone south yet? They must be stuck frozen in the campus pond.

12. “I wish I knew how to work the bus schedule.”

The only thing worse than figuring out the bus schedule is needing to add at least seven minutes to the arrival because the buses are never on time. If you haven't been packed like sardines at least once, then you haven't had a true UMass bus experience.

13. “I hope I don’t see anyone I know.”

*Walks by the one cute boy you were hoping to avoid*

Because why wouldn’t you see almost every single person you know on campus when you decided to wear sweats and no make-up?

14. "The library is my North Star."

No matter where you end up on campus of off look for the lights of the library and you are guaranteed to find your way home.

15. "My YikYak got over 200 ups, I'm basically famous."

When your yak gets on the popular page *drops mic*.

16. “Dreading this bitterly cold walk home."

The constant struggle of deciding between the risk of losing your quality winter jacket or risk getting frostbite during the 20 min trudge to the party.

17. "I need a cute outfit so people will notice me walking to class."

*I say as I throw on my black winter jacket, black leggings, and bean boots, like the other 10,000 girls that go here.*

18. "Shouldn’t have left so early to get to class.”

My power walk was too aggressive this morning and now I'm left standing outside the classroom 25 minutes early to class and have to make myself look busy on my phone.

19. "I hope this gets on the campus story."

Getting one of your snapchats on the campus story is probably one of the biggest accomplishments a student can achieve at UMass.

20. “This walk to the gym is basically a workout in itself.”

So when you get to the gym and it’s packed you don’t have to feel guilty about turning around and going back to your bed.

21. "I NEED Antonio's."

22. "Do I stay in or go out tonight?”

The most frequently asked question among college students. The answer is usually always to go out for the fear of missing out on the nights festivities.

23. "Almost got killed by a biker, today is off to a good start."

24. "Should I stop at the library and buy a coffee before class?”

Nah, I'll save my Dining Dollars for Baby Berk instead.

25. "Well tonight was a bust, Late Night anyone?"

Late Night is your best friend and is always there to comfort you when your night doesn't go as planned. Late Night offers students one last meal before the end of the day. Trust me the lines are ALWAYS worth the wait.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
