Why do people have bucket lists? Why is it that society has grown to be so obsessed with the idea that they have to accomplish specific goals to validate their lives?
Alright, listen up guys. I understand the desire to be successful, and to do things that you've always wanted to do. HOWEVER, when you're more focused on checking items off a list rather than enjoying the things you're doing, I think you've missed the point entirely.
Society now is all about the "go! go! go!" Everyone is focused on the next new thing, the bigger and better and more cutting-edge. It seems as if you can't even fully enjoy five minutes of what you're doing in the current moment without already planning you're next actions.
Existing in the present, is something that we all struggle with. Although it sounds cliche, "living for the moment" is one of the most important things to remember. In an age where social media is all about showing off what you've done or what you have, it's important to remember that in more cases than not, your memories are more valuable than a picture on your cell phone.
Studies have shown that you are less likely to remember an event from which you have pictures and video than one during which you put down the phone and just enjoyed. That is, you're less likely to focus on the moment you're in when you're too busy trying to snap a trendy, Instagram-worthy photo.
When you look back on your life, you're not going to think about how many countries you visited or if you rode a camel in Egypt; you're going to remember the people you met in those countries and the exhilaration you felt atop that animal. In the end, as long as you felt joy and love and happiness, it doesn't matter where you traveled to or what's on your resume. If you've experienced the things that truly matter, you're far more lucky than any person that has checked off every item on their bucket list.
