When people think of Clueless, unfortunately some just ask if that’s the one Mean Girls is based on. However, Clueless and its valley-girl heroine, Cher Horowitz, did more than just give inspiration for the modern day “classic” that is Mean Girls; it allows the rare opportunity for us mere 'normal people' to peer into the world of the cool kids: you know the Beverly Hills ones with the cash, clothes, and cocktails.
Cher was the original queen bee, and she ruled over her kingdom with impeccable fashion sense and whip-fast comebacks. I mean, it was hard to be her—the spotlight can be tough sometimes, but someone has to do it. That someone was Cher. Now, as Cher would say, imitation is the finest form of flattery.
Iggy Azalea came out with a Clueless-inspired music video. While the first instinct would be “AS IF,” maybe it isn’t such a bad thing to be taken back down the halls of Bronson Alcott High School after all. Just what would Cher have to say about the year 2014 though?
Now, it’s safe to say Cher would not be having some of the trends we’ve seen in 2014. I mean, why would anyone willingly have ice-cold water poured on their fresh blowout? That’s a crime. And what’s with those girls in oversized t-shirts? Don’t they know they have a waist? Calvin Klein would be appalled. I guess those Hemsworth boys are almost as cute as the Baldwin brothers…maybe. And is it just me, or are those British boys just a more high-pitched version of New Kids On The Block? Whatever, at least Snapchat lets me send selfies to my friends. I know they appreciate it.
Trends of the 90’s left some of the biggest fashion statements of the century, and 90’s slang can only be described as totally buggin’. Head-to-toe plaid is nothing to mess with, and that’s a good outfit. Just look at all of those oversized flannels, Birks, converse, ripped jeans, Baja jackets…wait, why do these seem familiar?
Even though it was a very different decade, Cher knew what was up with boys too. If a boy said he would call you the next day (or in our case text), in boy time it actually meant Thursday night for sure. And when searching for a boyfriend, she knew not to rush. I mean, look how picky we are about Instagram filters, how do you find a boy you like enough to date if you have a hard time committing to a filter?
The most important lesson Cher taught us, though, was to never back down from what you believe. And along with the laughs, we acquired life lessons about everything from matchmaking to cuticle care to true friendship. While Iggy Azalea took us 90’s kids on a walk down memory lane in her video, she also reinforced that no matter what, no one can do it quite like Cher.
