Kindness: Sprinkle That Sh*t Everywhere

If you have ever watched a video clip of The Kid President then you have probably fallen in love with him just as I have. Not only is he absolutely adorable, but the messages that he advocates for are powerful beyond his years. The most important message being his challenge to stop bullying and start spreading kindness. This is a cause that everyone should get behind.

If you have ever been in one of those drive-thru lines at Dunkin' Donuts where the car in front of you pays for your coffee so you pay for the person behind you, then you know how good it feels to accept a small act of kindness from a stranger. You also know how awesome it feels to do something nice for someone else. It is these chain reactions of kindness that need to be mimicked by our generation to start a revolution of positivity and kindness. It can be anything from helping an old woman with her bags at the grocery store to writing someone a thank you note; even a hug goes a long way. If everyone committed to one act of kindness a day, think about how much better the world would be. How much happier would everyone be? Yet the challenge goes much farther than that.

What I am talking about here is the idea that for most of us it is easy to be kind to a complete stranger, but much harder to be nice to people we may see every day. The reason that our generation has such trouble with this can be summed up in one word, technology. We were blessed and we were burdened when technology took over our generation's lives. From middle school we were bashing each other on AOL instant messengers and since then we have viewed technology as a mask that we can hide behind. People get this sense of power when they are behind a phone or laptop screen where they think they can say and do anything they want. They think the powerful and hurtful words they write are “ok” because they do not see the reaction of the person they are spewing them at on the other side of the screen. This digital bullying phenomenon has gone on too long, and it is time that we start treating everyone with the same kindness we would show to that little old lady at the grocery store.

As easy as it is to tweet out an angry message at someone, it is just as easy to comment something nice on their picture. We should be building each other up not tearing each other down. It takes five seconds out of someone's day to say or write something nice about someone else, so why not do it? Why do we spend so much time talking about what we don’t like about each other and not nearly enough time talking about what we love?

If you can start changing your can't into can, and your hate into love, then you will lead a much more positive life. That positivity will help you take part in the kindness revolution that it's time for our generation to take charge of.

Make someone smile today, it will make a world of a difference!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
