Frank Underwood's Tips for Freshmen

Freshmen face numerous challenges upon arrival at Tulane. Students must make new friends, earn high grades, and adjust to the craziness that is New Orleans. All in all, many people are plagued by self-doubt and uncertainty, and struggle to find their place on campus.

The political animals of "House of Cards," a popular Netflix series featuring the ruthless Frank and Claire Underwood, can serve as a source of inspiration for incoming Tulane students. Whether it's forming strategic alliances or pushing a risky bill through Congress, the Underwoods are intelligent, resourceful, and above all, fearless. By adopting these qualities, first year students will be able to rise to the top of the Tulane ladder. Here are the most essential pieces of advice for freshmen, directly from Frank himself.

While some rules and laws cannot be ignored, it helps to keep an open mind. You never know what new experiences you will have by breaking boundaries and getting outside of your comfort zone.

Are you terrified at the thought of writing a 30-page research paper in only four days? If you break it down in to smaller pieces, the work is more manageable.

As you enter the social jungle of freshman year, be wary of who you befriend. Unnecessary drama and gossip can make your first year an unpleasant one.

Have you ever heard the expression, "Nothing good happens after 3 a.m.?" After a few months of college, you might come to the same conclusion. Follow Frank's lead and try to make choices when you're awake and well-rested, especially when it comes to academics.

Oh, the dreaded group project. As all college students (and politicians) know, it's important to communicate with your peers and keep focused on your goals.

Even though he doesn't like it more than you do, Frank Underwood sleeps at night. A solid night's rest will do wonders for your health and sanity this year. Naps are highly recommended.

Good luck, Tulane Class of 2019! The Underwoods are backing you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
