HOUSTON -- On Friday night, a deputy officer, Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping gas at a Chevron station located in Harris County, TX, when a gunman fatally shot Goforth from behind, leading to his death.
The news hit instantly, spreading across local Houston news stations and online. Officials said that the attack was not provoked, and there was no prior relationship between the gunman, Shannon J. Miles, 30, and Goforth.
Following Friday's news, Goforth's family, the law enforcement and local community came together to mourn the tragedy and to remember the deputy for his contribution to law enforcement and his highly fulfilled duty of protecting his community.
The "Black Lives Matter" movement that was highly publicized throughout the media, pinpointing the push for reforms in policing. But this led to the diminish of credibility and safety for those working within law enforcement, and has caused a divide between the black community and police.
While it is obvious that there are flaws within the system, many now are pining the entire blame on the entire law enforcement community for the unfortunate events leading to deaths within the black community.
However, it is not only black lives that matter. We should make a new movement, "Every Life Matters," including our law enforcement. We are at a point where the divide needs to stop, and respect for authority should be reinstalled into our culture.
