When One Door Closes

We haveĀ all heard the quote "When one door closes, another one opens." Sure, it sounds great in theory and it is so easy to offer this timeless saying up as advice when someone else is dealing with rejection. But what about when rejection happens to you? All of a sudden, this wise advice does not seem very comforting and itĀ is not so easyĀ to see the numerous opportunities brought about by this supposed "closed door." However, this saying is widely used for one plain and simpleĀ reason: it is true.Ā

"New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings."

I believe one reason we struggle to move on from all of the closed doors in our lives is because we are too busy wallowing and drowningĀ in the pain. That is completely understandable. We would notĀ need inspirational quotes or advice if closed doors were completely painless. Break-ups hurt, rejection letters sting, and having to move on fromĀ things thatĀ you have put a lot of time andĀ effort intoĀ is difficult. The upsideĀ is that not all pain has to leave a scar. We can learn from ourĀ pain and face those open doors with a new perspective. The bottom line is that you should not let pain fool you into thinking that you can never be happy again; that is absolutely false.Ā You are allowed to be sad for a little while as long as you recognize that what you are going through is fleeting andĀ only preparing you for the amazing opportunities you will be met with in the future.

"Sometimes the bad things that happen in our lives put us directly on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us."

We learn from our struggles, we learn from adversity, and we learn from our misfortunes. We learn and we grow. Stop letting closed doors hold you back. Turn around and face all of the open doors that willĀ lead youĀ to new experiences. Run straight through them and embrace exciting, fresh beginnings and new challenges.Ā Things begin and thenĀ sometimes they end. Not everything can last forever and that is perfectly okay. Take a deep breath and move on.Ā Your open doors are waiting to be explored.Ā

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
