How are you supposed to find a happy medium in your outfit for Florida sunshine, yet your arctic classroom?
When my alarm goes off to get up for class, I have to mentally motivate myself to move and actually go. I can’t stop thinking: Do I really need to go? Can’t I just stay here? Why can't I just Skype my class from my bed? I think, well, I might as well make the best of class. For me, that’s stocking up on snacks, a yummy drink, and staying comfortable. But wait, how can I dress to be the most comfortable, but hide the fact I just rolled out of bed?
I look straight out my window, another bright, sun shining day in Florida. I decided to wear those cute stylish summer clothes again, because well, I can. In Florida, “it’s summertime all the time.”
But is it?
I’m about to walk out of my dorm to 80 degree high humidity, temperatures then into the air-conditioned building my class is held in. I enjoy my walk to class in my cute summer clothes but then I sit down in my class and immediately get the chills. I’m trapped in what feels like the ice age. I thought I moved south to avoid the cold?
You also can’t exactly walk to class in long pants/sweatshirt/scarf and not break a sweat (I mean break a sweat like a drop falling from your forehead and you don’t even realize it until you feel it trickle down your chin). Or some people may wonder if you even go here. I mean sweaters and Florida don’t really go together.
There is nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable in class whether you can’t feel your fingers or your shirt is sticking to your back. Maybe us new Floridians can’t complain about our simple first world problems we have. At least we don’t show up to class treading snow on our shoes and sit with wet feet for the next couple hours.
My only solution: A hot beverage from Starbucks and my favorite cardigan.
But this struggle will continue for me.
