There has been so much controversy about the town seal of the Village of Whitesboro in Upstate New York. Well, I am actually a person who grew up being a Whitesboro resident. They're are many different views about this particular seal and the media portrays our town as if we are the most racist town on the planet because we are a town called "Whitesboro."

The media likes to exaggerate everything and they failed to focus on the history of the seal. However, times have changed and it does look a little bad. Everybody is afraid of change and the media was shocked when the residents of Whitesboro decided to keep the original seal.

For those who don't know, Whitesboro his named after Hugh White, who was an early settler and was adopted in the Oneida tribe. The seal is supposed to demonstrate a friendly wrestling match between the white male and the Indian. Times have changed and in today's world, this does look racist to the majority of America.

I believe that the elder residents who have lived in Whitesboro didn't want to change the seal because it is history. I decided to ask individuals of the millennial generation who live or attended Whitesboro High School their opinion and thoughts.

"If social media never existed we wouldn't be battling this issue." — Rachael Scaramuzzino, 2013 graduate of Whitesboro.

"I think that the way it's portrayed right now does look a little bad. But the history of it is fine. Maybe if they moved the hands down a little bit it would be perfectly fine in my opinion." - Patrick Wiggins, a resident of Whitesboro.

"I've lived in Whitesboro my entire life and the people and community are wonderful people, the fact that outside people are oblivious to our history and perceive Whitesboro as racist is not only embarrassing but ignorant." — Nicholas Carzo, resident of Whitesboro

As the issue continues to be argued about, people should always remember each town has their own history, which makes each community special in their own way.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
