Ah, Shark Week. One of the only weeks of the year where one might actually be too afraid to slip on some flip-flops and go gallivanting to the beach. Originally started by Discovery Channel in 1988, Shark Week has become a summer staple for those just itching to learn about those terrifying monsters under the sea. As a lifelong viewer of Shark Week, I have been sitting in anticipation for the past couple weeks, and finally it's here!
Here are some of the highlights from this weeks programming, for those daring enough to dip their toes in the water:
(1) Shark Trek
Recently, there has been a lot in the news about Great White sightings in the waters just off the coast of Florida, and even as far north as Ocean City, Maryland. In this new special, shark specialist Greg Skomal and his team investigate the environmental and biological reasons that may be causing this sudden uprise in sightings. Tune in July 5th, at 8 PM / 7 PM Central.
(2) Shark After Dark
A returning special from last season, Shark After Dark recounts the specials from the night, and conducts interviews with the reigning experts. Shark After Dark is a must see because it incorporates comedians, experts, television personalities and actors! Tune in every night this week 11 PM/ 10 PM Central.
(3) Alien Sharks: Close Encounters
A new special for finatics to tune into this week, Alien Sharks recounts experiences with shark species in the deep sea. With less light and cooler temperatures, the bone structure and biology of deep sea sharks is a lot different than those who are exposed to conditions closer to the surface of the water. If you want to see some weird looking fish, Alien Sharks is a MUST. Tune in July 6, 10 PM/ 9 PM Central.
(4) Bride of Jaws
With the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" this year, the staff at Discovery has decided to find that famous shark a mate. At nearly eighteen feet long, and 3,000 pounds, the Bride of Jaws is the largest female shark found off the coast of Western Australia. Tune in July 7, 9 PM/ 8 PM Central.
(5) Ninja Sharks
Unfortunately, shark species, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean, are in a steep decline due to overfishing and environmental pressures. If these species decline further, an apex predator of the marine food chain is lost, resulting in intense environmental changes. Ninja Sharks explores the life of such an apex predator and their extremely specialized killing mechanisms that allow them to stay on top of the food chain. Tune in July 8, 10 PM / 9 PM Central.
(6) Shark Clans
Fifty years ago, Rodney Fox very nearly escaped death after a shark attack, and has now dedicated his life to the research and conservation of the very species that made an attempt at his life. In Shark Clans, a team of investigators, led by Fox, tags and records information on the migrating Great White sharks off the coast of South Australia. Tune in July 10, 10 PM / 9 PM Central.
(7) Sharksanity 2
If you've missed any of the most death-defying, heart-throbbing, stomach-churning moments of Shark Week 2015, tune into Sharksanity 2 and watch the recap! Tune in July 11, 9 PM / 8 PM Central.
So there you go, go forth and take a bite out of Shark Week! Happy Tails!
