7 Misconceptions About Going To A Women’s College
Stephens College

1. Since there are no boys here we never “try” in the morning. Please. First of all, I get ready and I dress up for ME, not for any boy. Also, let’s be honest, girls usually try to impress other girls more than they try to impress guys. Girls will notice what you wear more than guys will. It's a great feeling knowing that the campus is abuzz about your fashion choice of the day.

2. Everyone is constantly fighting. Nope. In fact, I believe that we, as members of a women’s institution, build each other up more often than tear down. In the classroom, we aren’t competing with males for a place in the class discussion, and we get our voices heard.

3. There is no interaction with males. I don’t know about others, but Stephens College is located in Columbia, Missouri, home to SEC school Mizzou. There are campus organizations at Mizzou we can join, not to mention a buzzing downtown day and nightlife. All just a hop, skip and a jump away.

4. All we do is burn bras. Haha! We have no annual “burning of the bras.” In 2014, we decorated bras for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but that’s hardly the same thing.

5. Every professor is a woman. My very first semester at Stephens College, out of my six classes, four of my teachers were males. This semester, I had all female. It depends on your major and class schedule, but we have both genders represented on staff.

6. We’re just rich white girls. I hear this all the time, and it is deeply offensive. We not only have a Diversity Week in January, but we also celebrate diversity through open conversation in and out of the classroom.

7. We’re insanely proud of our school. OK. This one’s 100% true.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
