It wasn’t until the end of a very long summer that I realized that I didn’t like where my life was headed. After a tough first year at SMU, I realized that I wasn’t happy. I had distanced myself from my faith and I was essentially from and of the world.
In August, I decided that I wanted to void the feelings of emptiness and grow in my Christian faith, which I had abandoned for many years. I realized that what I needed was to find a group of girls who were strong in their faith, who would accept me and my past mistakes, and who shared the same Christian values. I soon realized that what I needed was Sigma Phi Lambda.
Now, with recruitment quickly approaching, here are the top 4 reasons why I (and you) should choose Sigma Phi Lambda.
1. You're around girls who share the same values.
During my freshman year, I constantly compromised my values to fit in with the “SMU norm” and I wasn’t happy with the decisions that I had made. I had very few friends that were Christians and I hardly made the effort to surround myself with believers. With Phi Lamb, I am reminded to uphold my values and to follow Christ, even though others may disagree. With there being so much temptation and it being so easy to compromise my faith in college, surrounding myself with girls who strive to follow the word of God and be like Jesus is something that I admire and love to be surrounded by.
2. We all love God with all of our hearts.
As all things should be, God is the center of this sorority. As Christians, our hope is to be like Jesus. We strive to be as compassionate and loving like Jesus and it shows in every single one of the members. We all make mistakes and we are far from perfect, but by being in Phi Lamb, we are reminded that we are on this Earth to glorify God and make his name great.
3. It's truly a sisterhood.
A sisterhood is meant to be a safe place. In Phi Lamb, I can tell these girls anything that’s on my mind or anything that I’m struggling with and I know that they will always be there to listen and pray for me. For any problems that I face, I know that I have a community to go to that will give great advice and pray with me through the bad times that life throws.
Although I have lived in a Christian household my entire life, I still consider myself a new believer and I have never felt ashamed of that in Phi Lamb. In fact, these girls accepted me with open arms and they were excited to grow in the Christian faith with me!
4. It's Fun!
Like every sorority, we have date parties, formals, date dashes, philanthropy events, open parties, and Monday night Chapter at HPUMC, which I always look forward to. I love seeing each and every one of my sisters throughout the week and all of them have been a huge blessing in my life. I am so happy that they are a part of my life and I hope that they can be a part of yours too.
Recruitment begins Tuesday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m. in Hughes Trigg Portico BCD and we hope you to see you there!
