My life is completely different, in a good way, from where it was a year ago. A year ago I was an eager high school senior ready to take on college. Here are a few tips that Samford's next freshmen class should know before coming on campus:
1. Use your money wisely.
You'll want to buy every T-shirt possible, and you'll want to eat out every so often. Don't forget that it adds up pretty quickly. Think ahead of what you really need to buy and what you can live without.
2. Don't be afraid to stay up late.
The best conversations happen when you and your friends are up late in someone's dorm talking about life. Yes, you might be tired in the morning when you have to get up for an 8 a.m. class, but you won't regret making memories that will last a lifetime.
3. Finding good, genuine friends may take a while.
The first few months at college are a blur, and you meet so many people. Don't feel like the first people you meet are going to be your only friends. It may take getting involved in Greek Life or other campus organizations to really find those friends you connect with.
4. You're at college for studying, not socializing.
Don't forget the real reason you are here: to be prepared to find a career after college. College can be a lot of fun, but keep it to a minimum and get your work done.
5. Go to "Convo" as much as you can first semester.
One thing that makes Samford different from other schools is it requires you to go to Convocation (or other events that offer Convocation credit) to get 60 credits over the course of your four years at Samford. It may be pretty boring but go as much as you can your first semester because you will get so busy later on.
6. Don't forget to call your Mom.
Your mom still exists! Call her every few days, or at least once a week to update her on what's going on or to ask her how she's been. She will love hearing from you.
7. Go to sporting events.
Support your school! Go an event like the tennis matches, not just football games. You never know who you'll meet there, and the teams will love your support.
8. Get Involved.
See any cool clubs on campus? Join them! Think you have some great leadership skills? Join SGA! Want a great community of guys or girls? Join a sorority or fraternity! The best way to meet people is through joining and getting involved in different things on campus.
9. Have a day to do nothing.
It's okay to have days to yourself; odds are you actually need them. You see people in your dorm or on your hall every day. It's nice to take a break from seeing everyone and be alone for a while to collect your thoughts.
10. Do a Step Sing show.
Step Sing is easily the most popular event and most well known event on Samford's campus. It's the oldest tradition and almost everyone is involved. It's a great way to meet and get to know everyone in a fun way.
