5 Things To Do In Philly This Fall

Right now, it is capital H-O-T outside. Walking from class to class with a heavy backpack is enough to break you out in a sweat and have you counting the days until fall and cool weather. Even though it seems like it's a long way off, you can always start planning your autumn weekends in the City of Brotherly Love now. Bonus: most of these places offer student discounts!

1. Philadelphia Magic Gardens

The Philadelphia Magic Gardens, sometimes known as "PMG," is a huge museum/art gallery made entirely of mosaic tiles and concrete on South Street. Artist Isaiah Zagar began this project in 1994, and it is still not finished, as he is constantly changing and adding different pieces. Admission is only $5 for students and is open until 8:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

2. Phillies Game

Although most of the games take place in the summer, nothing beats sitting at Citizen's Bank Park in the fall. It's not too hot out, and you'll get a night of entertainment watching the Phanatic dance around the field. Plus, the ballpark has a beautiful view of the Philly skyline as the sun is setting behind it. Citizen's Bank Park is offering student discount dates for September 14-16 as the Phillies take on the Washington Nationals at 7:05 PM all three nights.

3. Philadelphia Cheesesteak Festival

Wit or witout? Nothing says "Philadelphia" like the classic Philly cheesesteak! On October 24, Lincoln Financial Field is hosting the city's first Philadelphia Cheesesteak Festival, which includes samples from over 40 vendors from around the city. There will be live entertainment and a 450-foot cheesesteak! General admission costs $20, with each sample costing $2, making this a bit of a pricier event.

4. The Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo is the first zoo in the United States, built in 1859. It definitely won't be as hot walking around in the fall, making the whole experience more enjoyable. The zoo is home to more than 1300 animals, including 16 endangered species. Adult tickets cost $20 until October 31, and are discounted to $16 after that date.

5. The Eastern State Penitentiary "Terror Behind the Walls"

Every fall, the Eastern State Penitentiary hosts a haunted house walk-through. It was used as a real prison for almost 150 years, and now hosts tours all throughout the year. The fall exhibit "Terror Behind the Walls" is reportedly one of the scariest haunted house walk-throughs in the United States. The first viewings are September 18 and 19, and then pick up again for almost the entire month of October. The Penitentiary offers Student Sundays, where tickets are half-priced.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
