Technology Ruins Childhood

Your childhood is a time to play, take naps and have fun. It's about enjoying life before we have to take on responsibilities as an adult. However, the children of today are no longer participating in normal childhood activities. Instead, they are assuming the role of mini-adults. They have become dependent on cell phones and computers. The newest technology is ruining childhoods across America.

It was during the beginning of my senior year of high school when I really started to notice the technology takeover. My school decided to add Wi-Fi into all of their classrooms, so teachers could start using technology to teach lessons. By the time it started, everyone was pumped for what was going to happen. The previous three years, everyone had to turn off their phones and actually listen to the teachers. With Wi-Fi, no one listened in class and instead decided to text, FaceTime and play around on their phones. I will admit to falling prey to this. I was constantly looking at my device when the teacher was looking away, and I texted during class. In fact, part of the grading criteria during this time was how much the student was on their phone. Suffice to say that most students were not doing well in their classes. With this being said, I can only imagine how Wi-Fi has affected the younger children, who have much lower attention spans than teenagers.

Wi-Fi in elementary and middle schools has its consequences. Instead of going outside for recess, kids have the option to use their cell phones and stay inside. I remember a time when no one would want to be stuck inside a classroom instead of going outside. Why go outside and interact with others, when they could just sit around with their phones? Another possibility is that when going outside, everyone just huddles around outside, under a tree, looking at their phones, texting people they are sitting next to.

There was a time in life when kids actually looked forward to going to school to see people they had not seen or talked to since the last time they were at school. There would be reunions outside of the schools before classes started. Kids would huddle up and talk about their vacations. Things have changed. Kids can FaceTime each other while on vacation. They can text message each other instead of spending quality time with each other. The "quality time" spent with one another is through texting. Even sitting around in classrooms, people rarely talk, but instead send text messages to each other.

This world is so obsessed with technology. People barely ever communicate in person anymore. No one knows his or her phone numbers anymore. As sad as it is, as adults, we are like this. Now, the younger generations are getting like this. As more technology gets released, it is just going to get worse in the years to come.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
