Kindergarten is an important time in anyone's life. It's where you learn arts and crafts, how to write your name, and to never talk to strangers. But, some lessons that we learned in kindergarten are still pretty relevant as we grow older, especially in college.
1. Nap time is valuable.
Nap time was an essential part of kindergarten and it still remains essential today. Staying up late to study, hangout with friends, or party, is a frequent occurrence for college students which makes a nap the next day very important.
2. Treat others how you would want to be treated.
Sure, in kindergarten this meant not to pull your friends hair or call them smelly, but the idea is just the same. Don't treat others badly and not expect repercussions. Treat your fellow students and teachers with respect and show them hard-work, and you'll get that in return.
3. Use your inside voice.
This is a lesson I think some people still need to learn. Why go to lecture just to talk through it? Or, when you go out at night, is there really a reason to scream and wake people up as you walk down the street? Use your inside voices people.
4. Always be prepared.
Parents always send their kids to kindergarten with a full backpack of lunch and crayons and their favorite stuffed animal. Learn from your parents, bring your own number two pencil to the exam.
5. Clean up after yourself.
Sing the clean up song you learned in kindergarten if that's what it takes to wash the dishes that are piling up in your sink.
6. Be a good listener.
You listened to your teachers in kindergarten, and you can do the same in college. Trust me, listening through one boring class will feel a lot better once you know all of the information for the exam. Also, listen to your friends. Everyone is going through a lot, especially in college, and we all need a friend sometimes.
7. You get what you get and you don't get upset.
Yeah, it sucks that they ran out of pancakes in the dining hall and it sucks that your midterm happens to fall on your birthday, but don't let it ruin your day.
8. If Something isn't yours, don't take it.
In kindergarten, this may have meant taking someone's fruit snacks or their last puzzle piece, but in college it ranges from stolen wallets, bikes, laptops, you name it. If it isn't yours, leave it alone.
9. Apologize.
Say you're sorry and be friends again, just like kindergartners do. It's not that hard to let go of your ego for something more important.
10. Be Silly and be yourself.
Don't let the fear of others judging you keep you from doing something you love. Live the way a kindergartner would live: carefree.
Kindergarten clearly is a crucial part of life, and has taught us (and still is teaching us) so much. So, as much as your little sibling or cousin may annoy you, there may be a thing or two you can learn from them.
