Now that the summer is done at Purdue, I'm taking a look back at both the positives and negatives.
PROS:
There’s no one at the bars: You don’t have to wait in line for drinks, the summer specials are fantastic. Even if you have to go to the bathroom while you are in the piano bar, you can still get back into the piano bar!
It is easy to drive around campus: You no longer have to worry about traffic or long lights or anything. There is hardly anyone on campus at all, let alone anyone that is able to drive. Parking is a breeze, and if you do take summer classes, you can drive to all of them.
The weather is bearable: It’s nice out… you can do outside things and hang out outside and not want to get inside of a door as fast as possible because Indiana winters just consist of a ton of wind and very stinging ice particles...and more wind. Instead, you can spend evenings outside watching a bug zapper…which is what I did.
CONS:
There’s no one at the bars: While it’s nice not to have to wait in line at all for Wing Wednesdays, it’s also a bit boring, and very few evenings lasted past midnight. It makes waking up a lot easier the next day though?
It’s IMPOSSIBLE to drive around campus: As soon as the Spring Semester gets out, the whole campus undergoes ridiculous amounts of construction. At one point, Stadium was shut down, Russel was detoured, and Northwestern became one lane!
The weather is unpredictable: I worked for a moving company all summer, and it was either 90 degrees and humid or storming all the time. The only decent times of the day are right before sunset and right at sunup. There was one day that actually had three separate storms with sunshine between them.
Everyone should spend one summer of their college career on campus, one at home, and one at an internship in a new place. While this summer at Purdue was boring, it was a great experience, and it is pretty interesting to see campus not bustling with students. I was able to get a great internship that paired well with a few Ivy Tech classes, and as a result, I will still graduate on time. Seems like a win-win.
