On Living Out...

4

Welcome to another issue of the Odyssey! Only one more weekend of sorority lock in and bro-fests! While I love being a senior, I've come to realize that living out certainly has it's pros and cons.

Circa this time last year, we were visiting potential apartments and figuring out who we were going to live with. At the time, the process was stressful but exciting, and we couldn’t wait to finally be seniors and live on our own with our friends. Now, I think all of the live out seniors have come to realize that living in an apartment may not be everything we expected.

The Good: No more house rules, no more loud dining rooms while you're attempting to get yourself together, and no more sharing a bathroom with at least 20 other people. As long as you and your roommates are on the same page about everything, the following should be how you spend your senior year days and nights. If you want to invite someone over, invite them over. If you want to sing/scream in the shower, go ahead. If you want to walk around naked, do just that BECAUSE YOU CAN. And if you're over 21, the obvious.

The Bad: I thought buying groceries was going to be fun. I'm not sure where I came up with that idea because going to Wal-Mart/Target (or wherever you go) and realizing how much money you have to spend to feed yourself is annoying. Cleaning is another thing. God bless the ladies who clean Pi Phi and all the other houses every day, honestly. Floors get dirty really, really fast. Who knew four girls could go through so many dishes each day?

The Ugly: There are some very, very scary things you underclassmen should be aware of before signing a lease. MAKE SURE you tour the apartment you're planning on signing for BEFORE you sign it. Take a look at the walls, the carpet, all that fun stuff that we have looked over for the last couple of years. Oh and watch out for monster bugs. Shout out to Kyle Bayram for introducing me to a bug I didn’t know existed in Indiana. If you're interested in learning more about said bug, follow him @kylebayram on Twitter.  But use caution, I haven't been able to look at my apartment the same since.

Living out is just the beginning of the real world slapping us across the face. Take advantage of the time you have living in, and always ALWAYS remember to thank the people who work in/for your house. Remember to be appreciative of the amazing community we have at Purdue and have an excellent week!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
