The Pros Of Having A Guy Best Friend

It's actually possible to be "just friends."

The Pros Of Having A Guy Best Friend

In high school, I spent copious amounts of time with my girlfriends. My girl-squad and I did everything together, seriously, it was frightening. Sure, we had some guy friends that we would chill with from time to time, but I never considered any of those dudes my "besties."

Little did I know, things would change when I got to college. I still have my homegirls that I do all my girly girl doings with, but my best-est best friend at school is actually a guy. Thanks to him, I've learned many things about life, love, friendship, and guys.

Here are some of my favorite parts about having a dude as a best friend.

He doesn't cause drama in your life.

Not to sound like that, "I love being friends with guys better than girls, it's less drama," chick that we all know and probably don't love, but it's totally true. I have yet to get into an actual argument with my best friend, and he never seriously pisses me off.

He doesn't beat around the bush.

The cold, hard truth is always served when asking my best friend for advice. He will 100 percent be the one to tell me if that one outfit is too revealing, the boy that is trying to talk to me seems like an idiot, or if I need to cool it with the snacks and hit the gym. The best part is, I can't take offense to any of this. He's just being his bro-self.

Having a built-in wingman

After their careful, brotherly and sometimes father-like judgment, they will for sure walk over to that guy at the party and tell him that you think he's cute. Usually, this will follow with a "don't mess up" glare and a stern handshake. Like I said, sometimes father-like...

And naturally... Having a built in bodyguard

Even though they are down to be the wingman (maybe) with that cute boy, they will be even more wiling to walk over to the not-so-cute and creepy boy and tell him what's up if he's bothering you. Although this is sometimes embarrassing, it's usually awesome. Thanks, Dad. I mean.... best friend.

He never makes things weird, even though everyone thinks you're dating

If I had a dollar for every time my mom asked me if I'm dating that boy I'm always with, I'd be a rich woman. Even when I met his parents for the first time, I totally got the vibe that they thought we were hooking up. Obviously we aren't, but we never find this accusation awkward. Instead, we find it hilarious.

He makes you look at life from a simpler perspective

If you know a guy, you know how laid back he is. Unlike girls, guys don't over-think anything and are usually only worried about what time they can get to the gym that day. My best friend reminds me to stay grounded and not to sweat the small stuff. Everything will be okay.

He taught you that it is possible for guys and girls to be "just friends"

Congrats to us, we've beat the system! To anyone who thinks it's not actually possible for a guy and girl to be just friends, you are wrong and should highly consider finding a bestie of the opposite sex.

It rocks.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
