How To Survive The Penn State Winter

Before you know it, winter will roll into State College. Are you going to be prepared?

A typical winter is cold, snowy, and not always pleasant. However, in State College, there is no such thing as a typical winter, as it is rather severe and unpredictable. One day it could be snowy, and the next day, it could be sunny and warm. As a result, in order to survive winter as a Penn Stater, there are some tips to follow.

Here are some tips that will make the winter more bearable when the temperatures fluctuate between -20 and 60 degrees within a matter of a day:

1. Layers. Wear layers. If you have a class in Forum or Willard, you are going to sweat more than you'd expect, as Penn State loves to blast the heat to compensate for the frigid temperatures. With your parka on the outside, you can take it off during class and be comfortable with whatever outfit you please. Layers can be added in the winter, unlike summer when you can only take so many off.

2. Check the weather before you go to class. It can save you from getting frostbite, or in the opposite case, over dressing.

3. Boots. Sidewalks can get icy in the winter. Investing in winter boots is important to ensure the best grip you can get on your feet. I’ve witnessed some pretty bad slips because students weren’t wearing the proper winter shoes.

4. Frackets. When you go out at night, wear a fracket. A fracket is a jacket you wear out when you go to the frats. Make sure it isn’t one that has sentimental value because there is a chance it could get stolen. Check out my guide for fracket etiquette.

5. Gloves are a must. When it’s freezing out, you are going to want gloves or mittens. Frostbite is not fun. I got frostbite one time and I cried for an hour because the pain was excruciating. Even if you don’t think you’ll need them during the day, pack them in your backpack just in case.

6. I promise no one is judging you. So what, you look like the Michelin Man or The Abominable Snowman, at least you’re warm. The warmer you are, the better that dreaded walk to class will be. No one is going to judge you for looking ridiculous. If anything, they are just going to be jealous of how warm you are.

7. Hot Chocolate and coffee. Take advantage of the hot beverages during the winter. If you are 21 or over, you can add Peppermint Schnapps to your hot chocolate to make for a delicious alcoholic beverage.

8. Cuddling. If you’re cold, grab someone to snuggle with. Cuddling will keep you warm. I promise.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.

The dynamics of any friend group are usually determined by the personalities which make it up. Chances are, while personalities may overlap, each person in your friend group holds his or her own place. It is the differences which bring the groups together and keep them functioning. No matter how functionally dysfunctional your friend group may be, if you're anything like me, you feel absolutely blessed to have found such a wonderful group of humans to call "your people."
