Getting to come home to San Jose, California is always quite a treat. While San Jose does not have a significant number of attractions, there are so many places to go nearby. It is so awesome knowing that San Francisco is just 45 minutes north and Monterey is just an hour and a half south with everything else in between.
It is so hard to pick what the best places to go are, but here are my personal top five favorite places to visit.
1. Carmel
Carmel is located in Monterey County and is absolutely beautiful. The town itself is filled with a variety of shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and so much more. It is also home to the famous 17-Mile Drive that takes you through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove located on the Monterey Peninsula. If you love the beach, shopping and golf, then Carmel is definitely a place you must visit.
2. San Francisco
Of course, San Francisco is a major city and is at the top of everyone's "must visit" list when they are in Northern California. If you choose to spend the day in San Francisco, the two places you must go are the Marina District and Union Square. The Golden Gate Bridge is honestly one of the most beautiful and picturesque sites you will ever see, especially when it is draped with fog. Union Square is the heart of downtown and has all the shopping and restaurants you could ever imagine. The view of the city from the Cheesecake Factory at the top of Macy's is spectacular.
3. Tiburon
Just across the bay from San Francisco, in Marin County, lies the gorgeous city of Tiburon. If you enjoy sailing, eating freshly caught seafood and beautiful views, then you must pay a visit here. It is also just a short drive away from Muir Woods where you can embrace your inner treehugger and see the famous Redwood trees.
4. Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay is a real gem. Located in San Mateo County, Half Moon Bay is the perfect destination for a day trip to the beach, a round of golf or even for a weekend getaway where you can stay at the beautiful Ritz Carlton, located right on the water and (of course) accompanied by a phenomenal golf course.
5. Sonoma and Napa Valley
These neighboring regions present to you some of the greatest food, wine, views and experiences you will ever have. California Wine Country is definitely something worth experiencing at least once in your life and is absolutely something you will not be able to compare with anywhere else. If you care for a less touristy environment, travel two hours south to Livermore Valley—another part of Wine Country that is less publicized, but could easily compete with the best of any Sonoma or Napa Valley vineyards.
Overall, I highly recommend Northern California as a destination. You surely will not be disappointed with where you end up.
