Fans are having withdrawals after the season finale of Empire ended March 18th.
The show has been the new buzz around social media, dominating Twitter conversations and scoring about 13 million viewers. The audience just can't get enough of the chemistry and drama surrounding music god, Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard) and tough ex-wife, Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson). "The series has a soap opera flare with hip-hop sex appeal," says Cherese Jackson of Liberty Voice. The lively and sassy Cookie Lyon is released from jail 17 years later after having been arrested for selling drugs in order to invest in Lucious' talent and provide for her three kids. The show incorporates family dynamics, the musical dynasty and social controversies. However, no one can deny that the fashion plays a strong role in the rumble throughout media.
Costume designer, Rita McGhee, has done a stellar job making the cast look like a million bucks, especially our diva, Cookie Lyon. “Cookie is a woman who was just released prison," McGhee tells The Washington Post. “She took the rap for her man, and now she is ready to claim what she feels is rightfully hers. Now that she is a boss woman, she has to look like one."
Here are the secrets behind the fashion looks of our goddess, Cookie Lyon:
Classy Queen
In episode 9 of Empire, Cookie is dressed in one of our favorites. Wearing a BCBG Maxazria Peplum top with the one and only Roberto Cavalli Brass and Plexiglass Monkey Necklace (retail $2,000), along with the matching cuff bracelet. The peplum top, embellished with a jacquard pattern, is complemented with the statement piece, and let's not forget Cookie's deep plum lipstick to soften the look.
Cheetalicious Mama
Turn the lights down low and observe our next sassy piece. During episode 6, "Out, Damned Spot," Cookie Lyon sports the Diane Von Furstenberg Silk Jersey Wrap Jumpsuit in cheetah print. This jumpsuit is one of the most iconic pieces sold exclusively through the DVF website for $299. Taking her outfit to another level, Cookie accessorizes with the Chanel Medallion Necklace: bold yet chic.
Sophisticated Beauty
This look is a true gem in the treasure chest we all call Cookie's closet. A gorgeous Alexander McQueen Baroque Laced Jacquard Dress is paired with a black cape jacket in Episode 6. This is truly one of her most design-forward silhouettes.
Zebra Diva
Rhinestones usually remind of us of trashy bedazzled cell phone cases or the Jersey Shore. This piece designed by Holy Balmain expresses quite the opposite. Cookie is dressed up for her son's musical debut in Episode 2, showcasing a long sleeved-gown, bedazzled with crystal. We clearly see where Lucious' money is going! “That Balmain dress was very expensive," McGhee says. “I had to make a few calls to get that on loan, but it was perfect for the club scene."
