Why Hospitality Business Is the Best Major

For those of you who don't know, a Hospitality Business (HB) major is someone who is looking to pursuing a career in hotels, restaurants, casinos or in my case, travel.  We come from all different types of backgrounds but share a common love for eating, vacationing and basically taking a break from life to be pampered with high quality customer service.

If you graduated from Michigan State University in THE School of Hospitality Business then you will know exactly what I am talking about. On the flip side, if you are an underclassman with an undecided major, let me tell you a few reasons why you should consider the best major they offer at Michigan State University...

1. Although Dr. Cichy would like to tell you otherwise, The School of Hospitality Business at MSU is number 2 in the country and number 3 in the world in terms of our hospitality business program. That is HUGE. Putting on your resume that you attended this school is recognizable across the globe.

2. You immediately make friends in this program.  Everyone. is. so. friendly. You'll never meet a shy and timid kid in a single class you're in. The majority of hospitality business majors are extroverts and not afraid to be heard. We are the type of people who walk into a room and know at least five people... and if we don't then we probably will have met at least five people in the first 30 minutes of arrival.

3. We tip well at restaurants. You know that friend you have that always tips cheap after a great meal? Nope, not a Hospitality Major. All of us have worked in a restaurant at some point in time and therefore always tip AT LEAST 20 percent. Seriously though people have some class, if you were given good service your tip should reflect that.

4. The classes are... well... not that hard. How are you supposed to teach good customer service in a classroom?  You really can't. Yes we have classes like accounting, finance, advanced marketing, etc, but all in all I would say it's a fairly easy load.

5.  ...That being said, you can usually find us at the Riv, Dublin, The Landshark or Rick's on majority of the weekdays...

6. You are forced out of your comfort zone in order to complete two 400 hour internships. This, in my opinion, is the best part about hospitality business. If it wasn't for this requirement then I would not have had the summer of my life in New York City and then yet another summer of my life roaming around Europe working for a Spanish tourism company. Yes, you can work close to home to complete these internships, but where's the fun in that? Go explore the world and get school credit for it!

7. The possibilities of where you work post-college are endless. We have had guest speakers in several classes who have mapped their "path to success" for us, in which most of them have lived as ex pats in crazy locations such as Dubai, Australia, South Africa, you name it. Imagine working here right out of college. If you can dream it, you can do it.

8. You will have friends in every class you take. I don't even need to discuss my schedule with my friends because I know that every class I take will have at least two friends in it. You basically just show up on the first day and shockingly see your group of friends sitting together in the front row as a nice pleasant surprise.

9. HB411 Beverages is the best class at MSU. I'm currently in a class in which we have "sensories" every week. If you don't know what a sensory is, it's an alcohol tasting. Currently we are studying wine, but throughout this course we will learn about whisky, scotch, vodka, gin and more. Sadly there is no tequila course, which was brought to everyone's attention during class by a girl who asked what everyone was thinking. NO tequila?!?

10. Lastly... We're the most fun. Sorry if you disagree but it's true. We know how to provide a good time to our customers/guests, therefore we expect just the same when we are off the clock.

So do yourself a favor and switch to HB. If you're already an HB major, then props to ya and see you in class.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
