All our lives we waste time looking for the right person. That one person you dream about, that dream wedding you imagined and your future together. As my third year of college almost comes to an end, I realize that you have the rest of your life to find your person.

Finding yourself and falling in love with you is more important than stressing about that one guy. Young women often worry and find themselves struggling with identity, but as a woman, you need to put an end to it. Women do not need men or their significant other to make them happy, they need to go out and become an independent woman. Find something that makes you happy, that is enjoyable and that makes you become a better person. Do not worry about that one guy that makes your heart melt over and over again, but instead, focus on yourself.

Let's face it, we all need to give ourselves a break and escape into the life we wanted to have. Many woman struggle with being independent and often find themselves stuck or alone. I’m still trying to become more independent, but with the help of what I enjoy it get’s easier each day. Ask yourself these following questions and thoughts to take your first step in becoming an independent woman.

1. What do you enjoy the most?

Think about one hobby or activity that you love, now expand it into something that changes you into a better person. For myself, it is working out, reading and focusing on my career path. I began to revolve my thoughts and actions around these certain things.

2. Make your own decisions before anyone else.

Do you ever feel yourself always waiting for your best friend or boyfriend to make a decision? Start to change this outlook and instead of waiting, make a move that is going make you happy.

3. Remove any obstacles in your path.

Do you find yourself stuck in place and surrounded by people who lead your life? Change this and remove these obstacles, because people who do not support your independent life do not belong in your life.

4. Reserve time for yourself every day.

When is the last time you had some “you” time? Give yourself a pat on the back for all the work you are doing and reward yourself. Set aside at least an hour each day to do something you enjoy.

5. Love yourself before anyone else.

Finally and the most important one is being in love with yourself. So many women, like myself often become self-conscious and will lower their standards to meet someone else’s. You are your own person, so do not let someone change that.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
