A (732) Summer

It’s no wonder why everyone who’s anyone flocks to the shore.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… well, almost. Anyone who retains the 732 area code understands the aura that surrounds this month. We are on the cusp of everything that makes life in Jersey worth living, and it never ceases to amaze me how amazing this place really is during the summertime. It’s no wonder everyone who’s anyone flocks to the shore like contentious seagulls when the calendar hits Memorial Day Weekend.

So while we endure the purgatory known as “May," let’s say sorry for the things we said when it was winter and dive head first into the Shangri-la of endless possibility that a summer in Monmouth County provides.

We all know that everything is better at the shore. A Bagel Masters’ porkroll, egg and cheese sandwich is The Eighth Wonder of the World. There’s nothing that a slice of pizza from Pete and Elda’s cannot cure. And a cone of cookie monster ice cream from Hoffman’s could end human suffering… However, it’s a known fact that the classics always taste better after you’re drenched in an ungodly amount of sun.

While it did not make CNN’s list of the “7 secular pilgrimages that could change your life,” your crusade to the most famous lawn in all of Holmdel has the potential to become a coming-of-age story. Fact: I’d choose the likes of Luke Bryan or Wiz Khalifa over The Kumano Ancient Trail any day. It’s impossible to fight the allure of the 2016 concert season’s lineup, so you’ll be there — even if after J Cole, you swore you’d never come back.

A drive down the Garden State Parkway or the Turnpike on a gorgeous Saturday morning is a cultural experience unlike any other. (Do question the Pennsylvania license plate’s authority to take up space in the left lane. Don’t use your blinker — then they’ll know you’re coming). That is why only locals understand the beauty of the 12-hour beach day that starts at sunrise... Visitors in the amateur division will never quite master this art — or how to achieve a front row parking spot.

For three months, life is blissful. Here's to a summer of Summer Stage, Pier Village, beach bonfires, The Navesink River, sunflower fields, Lobsterfest, the racetrack, Lighthouse and whatever else the 732 has in store for us this year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
