Teen Instagram Celebrity Essena O'Neill Quits Social Media

With half a million followers and an income from her posts, Essena O’Neill, a 19-year-old Australian, decided quit social media. In a thought-provoking declaration of war on social media, the “Instagram famous” celebrity deleted almost all of her posts and renamed her account to “Social Media Is Not Real.” O’Neill exposed her perfectly edited dream life by changing the captions on existing photos to unveil the truth behind the images.

In her newly revised captions, O’Neill revealed the posts she got paid for, how they made her feel and how many tries it took to get the perfect shot. All of her re-edited captions aim to prove that the content we see on social media is merely an illusion.

According to the website she recently created called Lets Be Game Changers, O'Neill accumulated 250,000 subscribers/followers on YouTube and Tumblr and had an average of 60,000 views on Snapchat. Her Instagram remains active to expose the reality behind the platform and her YouTube remains active for purely vegan education, but her Tumblr and Snapchat have been deleted forever.

To explain her reasoning behind why she thinks social media sucks, O'Neill posted a captivating video using Vimeo, which she also posted on her website. In the video, she confesses that she was only ever happy when her content did well. She believes it's absurd that when you put yourself out there, a number on a screen dictates the success or value of your content. O'Neill encourages people on social media to not let numbers define them.

Ultimately, O'Neill stresses: "Please, please can someone make something that isn't based on views, likes and followers?" She wants to change social media as it currently stands. She wants an app that isn't based on social approval.

O'Neill's uncovered truths that are absolutely mind-blowing and inspiring. The movement to become game changers really makes one think about the self-promoting, validation-seeking culture of social media. She not only shares her personal experience with the issue, but she takes it further and urges viewers to follow in her footsteps by not going on social media for one week: "Let's say to each other we're more than a f**king number."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
