The Party Bun: Today's Mullet?

A new trend has arrived on college campuses. The "Party Bun" has joined the ranks of oversized t-shirts, dad bodies and man buns and has hit classrooms, nightlife, and even the gym. For those of you who do not know what the party bun is, it is when someone wears their hair half up and half down, and puts part of their hair in a perky bun right on top of their head.

Here are a couple of examples:

Now that you are familiar on what the party bun is, here's the truth. This is a female's attempt at their version of a man bun, and it's not pretty. It comes from a good place; it's supposed to be cute, convenient and an easy hair style to do in a short amount of time, but it has many flaws.

It looks lazy.
It looks like you attempted to straighten or curl half of you hair and didn't bother to do the rest of it. Now I understand people do not like to take the time to do their hair all the time, but if you are going to put in the effort, you might as well do the whole thing. Also, when you put the bun in place in the morning, and it starts slowly falling out throughout the day, it comes off either as a failed attempt at a half pony tail or like you just rolled out of bed.

It is today's version of the mullet.
I hate to be the one to say it, but think about. Business in the front: your hair is pulled back and out of your face, and party in the back: the rest of it is down running wild. Just like how people look back at the mullet and cringe, a few years from now, people will wonder why the party bun was even a thing in the first place.

It is distracting.
Instead of someone focusing on you and what you have to say, they are going to be looking at the ball on top of your head. If you are studying and just want your hair to be pulled back, that is understandable, but out at night people may be a little confused by it. Show people that you are proud of your hair and want to be taken seriously by letting all your hair down! Most likely, people are going to see you as more confident, attractive and willing to listen to what you are saying.

It is going to make you uncomfortable.
When it comes to wearing this hairstyle to the gym, you are setting yourself up to be that much more hot, sweaty and annoyed by the amount of hair that is still covering the back of your neck.

I am usually not one to comment on other people's styles or preferences, but this trend has made zero sense to me. Not only does the party bun look like a failed, distracting and uncomfortable hair style, but it is undermining people's beautiful hair!

So show off what you got, and do not fall into this mullet-like trend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
