How Dr. Seuss Has Impacted Your Life

In honor of the new release, “What Pet Should I Get?”

How Dr. Seuss Has Impacted Your Life
Emily Bissel

1. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a Christmas staple in your house.

Whether it’s owning every version on DVD or catching the cartoon showing on ABC Family, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a tradition in your family. You can’t properly celebrate the holiday without watching the movie or reading the book.

2. You received a copy of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” for your high school graduation.

“Oh, the places you’ll go, Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

And it still makes you tear up a little when you read it.

3. You’ve eaten or have always wanted to eat green eggs and ham.

“I do not like them here or there. I do not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am."

Even though they taste the same as regular eggs and ham, they're still much better because they're green.

4. Every time you see a dandelion, you wonder if there’s a whole tiny village living on the flower.

“Our buildings, to you, would seem terribly small. But to us, who aren’t big, they are wonderfully tall.”

5. You wished the Cat in the Hat would stroll in your house on a rainy day.

"The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house, all that cold, cold, wet day."

You also learned how to rhyme with "The Cat in the Hat."

6. You and your best friend dressed as Thing One and Thing Two at least once.

"These things will not bite you. They want to have fun. Then, out of the box came Thing Two and Thing One."

Thing One and Thing Two are the perfect pair for any costumed event. No matter how simple or elaborate, people always know who you are dressed up as.

7. March 2nd is practically a holiday to you.

No matter how many times you might forget your great aunt’s birthday, you always know that March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Whether you celebrated in primary school by drawing pictures or you posted quotes on your social media accounts, you can never forget this man’s birthday.

8. You've been to Seuss Landing at Universal Studies and have ridden every ride at least three times.

No matter how old you are, the Caro-Seuss-El is still your favorite. Who doesn't love riding one of Dr. Seuss's fantastical creatures?

9. You've always wanted to visit Mulberry Street.

"With a roar of its motor an airplane appears, and dumps out confetti while everyone cheers."

And see not just any plain old parade, but one full of incredible creatures, big and small, and music and men with beards 10-feet long!

10. Whenever you've gone to the zoo, you think "If I Ran The Zoo..."

"So, I'd open each cage. I'd unlock every pen, let the animals go, and start over again. And, somehow or other, I think I could find some beasts of a much more un-usual kind."

Who wouldn't want to pay big money to see a ten-footed lion or an elephant cat? And to travel the world to find all of these creatures? An ordinary zoo trip would become much more exciting.

No matter which Dr. Seuss story was your favorite growing up, Dr. Seuss made an impact on your life. This man is a father-figure, leaving you with witty life lessons that have carried through every aspect of your life.

"Think left and think right, and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try."

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."

"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you."

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

Great Value Colleges

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.

The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.
