Here we go again. Spring break is officially over, and you are back to being buried in schoolwork. When there are research papers, presentations, and exams to prepare for, the pressure can often feel unbearable. One of the best ways to deal with this pressure is to take a brief vacation to a world where your stress doesn’t exist. Where can you take this vacation, you ask? It’s not somewhere you can go to by taking a car, plane, train, or bus. It’s a beautiful paradise that you can enter simply by using your remote control: the wonderful world of Netflix. While Netflix offers an overwhelming amount of shows, here are a few that are guaranteed to help you get through the rest of the semester:
1. "Friday Night Lights"
Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose. This show is sure to pump you up and inspire you to finish the semester strong. Any time you feel like giving up on school, just watch Coach Taylor give one of his infamous pep talks. Plus, you won’t be able to resist having a little bit of Tim Riggins in your life.2. "Lost"
Remember back in junior high when everyone was talking about this show and you had no idea what the big deal was? Now you can take a study break and finally figure out what all the fuss was about. After watching this show for a few minutes, you will completely forget about all of your problems. You will have so many questions by the end of the first episode that you won’t even remember crying over your homework an hour ago.3. "Gilmore Girls"
When you are away from home and ready to pull your hair out when you think of all of the things you have to do before summer break, you just need someone to make you feel like everything is going to be ok. That someone is Lorelai Gilmore. If you are in the mood to kick back, relax, and hear a vast amount of pop culture references that you probably won’t understand, this show is just for you. Plus, you can practice your debate skills by arguing with your friends about which boy Rory should be with in the new episodes coming to Netflix. (Hint: the correct answer is Jess Mariano).
4. "Grey's Anatomy"
Warning: Only the most disciplined students should watch this show during the semester. There are currently 11 seasons on Netflix and I guarantee you will not want to stop watching after you start. If you can handle just one or two episodes during your study breaks, you will not regret it. The drama in this show is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and you will quickly realize how small your problems are compared to Meredith Grey’s. When you are freaking out about writing a 10-page paper in one night, you can take comfort in the fact that at least you didn’t just cut someone’s LVAD wire (see Season 2).5. "Parks and Recreation"
This beloved comedy lasted seven seasons, and the majority of the episodes are 21 minutes long. You are likely to experience less guilt by watching a few episodes of this show, and you will be laughing the entire time. Be inspired by Leslie Knope’s work ethic, Ron Swanson’s independent spirit, Tom Haverford’s entrepreneurial skills, and Andy Dwyer’s sense of childlike wonder. The odds are that you will learn some fantastic quotes from this show that you can use as mantras throughout the day.
6. "The Office"
Last, but certainly not least, this show was the original "Parks and Recreation". It is a 21-minute, documentary-style comedy as well, but the plot lines are completely unique. You will be able to relate to the characters in the sense that they would rather be doing anything other than working. Take some time out of your day to enjoy Jim play countless pranks on Dwight and hear Michael’s cringe-worthy comments. All in all, you will learn not to take everything so seriously, and you will likely feel much more relaxed when you return to your homework. To all of my fellow students who are back from spring break: Keep up the hard work, enjoy these shows responsibly, and summer will be here before you know it.
