Although some people are lucky enough to have parents who are "technologically impaired" and can't quite figure out how to distinguish one social media site from the next, the reality is that most parents these days now have an account on Facebook. It's not the fact that we have anything to hide that makes us want to block them as soon as possible, it's that they really don't understand how embarrassing they can be. Here are just some of the typical behaviors I've noticed from mine, and other parents on Facebook.
Liking a picture unbelievably quickly after it's been posted or after being tagged in one. I swear my mom is some kind of Facebook ninja because literally minutes after I'm tagged in a picture she likes it.
Adding all of your friends as their friends. Just because you're the "cool mom" doesn't mean my friends want you stalking their every move too. There's nothing better than having your mom be the first, and possibly only, like on all of your friends' pictures.
Checking in wherever they go. Shout out to my dad on this one who checks into every single restaurant he goes to. Also for refusing to acknowledge the fact that his Facebook friends now make fun of him on his own posts for visiting the same restaurants way too often.
Confusing wall posts or comments with statuses. When they ask you why you didn't respond to their question and you have to tell them its because they posted it on their own wall and it was directed at no one. *facepalm*
Uploading baby pictures and/or embarrassing pictures of you. This means that any birthday, graduation or other milestone calls for a classic picture of you during your awkward phase or a picture of you that they think looks good but you think is horrible.
Bragging about you too much. Yes it's nice everyone once in a while to see all of the comments on your parent's posts congratulating you on something or wishing you a happy birthday, but after a while it can get embarrassing when your parents are updating their friends on every positive aspect of your life.
Although I'm not, and have never been allowed to block or unfriend my parents on Facebook, I've learned that everything that they do on it is out of either pure confusion or love. Oh, and mom and dad, I'm sure all of your Facebook friends will get a kick out of this article that you've probably shared at least five times and have fiercely encouraged them to do as well.
I encourage you all to have your parents take the "How 'Mom' Are You On Facebook?'' quiz, and read the questions out loud to them because you''ll definitely get a good laugh from it.
