12 Things I've Learned About Dancers By Living With One

Dancing is an art derived from not only the body within, but the soul; a form of communication that only select individuals can portray, telling not only a story, but a feeling; depicting an emotion that everyone can sense and feel through music. It sounds absolutely crazy but it’s unique and requires talent nonetheless.

For some of us, our bodies just don’t move flawlessly like that no matter how hard we try. For others, it’s a performance they’ve perfected since the itty-bitty days.

I had grown up with friends that were dancers, but I’ve never had been surrounded by one for more than a week straight. Last August, I made one my roommate.

Nine weeks later and this is what I’ve learned so far.

1. They want to talk to you about what they do, or at one point did, but they won’t bring it up until you do. They’re not fond of bragging but they love to talk about dance. Once you do bring it up though, they’re excited and will talk about it forever, showing you videos of previous performances and competitions. It’s pretty cool though to see them in action because let’s face it: they’re good at what they do.

2. The minute they move, something will crack. Whether it's their hip or something in their leg, a loud sound will happen. Don’t be fooled: they’re so used to this that they won’t even notice it.

3. Their pain tolerance is nuts. It’s crazy that they can perform at a high skill level while in pain, and be smiling from ear to ear. Tough cookies.

4. There’s a good chance that you’ll find them jumping in the air or doing some strange side-leap or Russian when they’re in a good mood. Yes, you’ll be jealous because you can’t do such a thing,
and yes, it looks cool.

5. When something is going wrong, they always look for the positive. Maybe because they’ve been through a handful of bad practices and moments before. Either way, they immediately get back on their feet and always know what to do. It’s what they’re accustomed to doing.

6. If you play a song, there a 99 percent chance they’ve done a dance to it, or the remix of it. And yes, they will get up and try to remember the dance.

7. If you play a new song they’ve never heard before, they will try to make up a dance for it. Yes, it will look awesome.

8. Their balance is incredible. You will never be able to catch them off guard. You can try it, but it won’t work.

9. They’re always dancing. And when I say always, I mean always.

10. If you ask them a question, chances are they’ll say yes and raise one leg straight into the air while they're still sitting. Yes, it is possible to do such a thing. No, I can’t do that without being in pain.

11. They're always stretching.

12. They're crazy sometimes, but trust me, you'll be glad you're friends with, or living with one. Dance on!

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
