The shooting rampage that spread like wildfire on social media involving an Uber driver in Kalamazoo, Michigan, left many Uber riders scared and appalled that such a horrific event occurred. Leaving six dead and two injured, Uber driver, Jason Dalton, left an impact on not only his victims' families but of families all around the U.S.
According to CNN, Dalton told investigators that the Uber app made him do these heinous crimes. He said that the app would "take over your whole body." Dalton explained to police that "the horned cow head of a devil would appear on his phone screen and give him an assignment." He told officials he carried his firearm on the night of Feb. 20 because the app "literally took over his body and mind," records said.
Even though none of Dalton's victims were Uber customers, police said Dalton continued to pick up Uber passengers during the wake of his shooting spree. Passengers even joked "You're not the guy going around killing people are you?" said one rider. "That is crazy," said Dalton. "No way I'm that guy."
Prior to shooting his first victim, Tina Carruthers, Dalton had been involved in a hit-in-run while driving an Uber passenger. The ride began around 4:30 p.m., in which things started to slowly turn for the worst. Dalton received a phone call in where the individual on the other end sounded "aggravated." The phone call only a lasted a few minutes until Dalton started to act out irrationally.
He started driving fast and even driving into oncoming traffic. He continued to blow through a stop sign, sideswipe a car, and drive off. The passenger told police he also blew two lights, went over a median and drove on the opposite side of the road to avoid traffic. The passenger at this time was yelling at Dalton to stop and which case Dalton yelled back, slammed on the brakes, and the passenger ran out of the car.
Starting at approximately 5:42 p.m. Dalton shot Tina Carruthers at her apartment complex in front of her children. Carruthers explained a silver SUV cut her off as she was walking. She explained the driver then drove past her and then turned around toward her. The driver, Dalton, pulled out a gun saying nothing and shot her.
He continued his killing spree over the span of five hours. Richard Smith, 53, and his son Tyler, 17, were the second and third victims to be shot by Dalton. Dalton committed his last shootings at a Cracker Barrel parking lot killing Dorothy Brown, 74; Barbara Hawthorne, 68; Mary Lou Nye, 62; and Mary Jo Nye, 60. Abigail Kopf, 14, was the only survivor of Dalton's final killing spree.
Uber headquarters indicated that Dalton underwent background checks, but passed because he had no criminal record according to BBC.com. Police have clarified that Dalton has no prior history of mental health issues that would explain his killing spree. Dalton will undergo a court-ordered mental competency exam. The results, however, will not affect his criminal responsibility for the shootings. If convicted, Jason Dalton could face life in prison.
