Feelin' 23

Hey, I don't know about you...but I'm feelin' 23?

Lexi Thayer

I've sadly gotten to the point in life where I'm turning the big 23. As blink-182 made famous: "No one likes you when you're 23." I'm now nearing the end of my college career, beginning to start looking for jobs and not knowing exactly what 23 has in store for me.

However, I've decided to take turning 23 one of the best years yet. I've compiled a list of 23 things that I want to accomplish within the year of being 23. Hopefully, a few of these come in handy for my fellow 23-year-old's reading this.

1. Be more positive

I know it's easier said than done, but if you remain in a negative rut you won't get anywhere.

2. To laugh more

There is nothing better than laughing and having a good time with your friends and family.

3. Graduate college

There is nothing more special than saying you have a college degree. (Personally for me, it's been a long journey. But I cannot wait to walk across that stage.)

4. Find my first big girl job

The job search is tedious and nerve-racking, but once you land your first job it'll make you feel like a real adult.

5. Get a puppy (well, think about getting one)

Look at that face? Who wouldn't want to snuggle with their furever friend? I'll take five, please!

6. Take spontaneous road trips

Grabbing all your friends and taking a random trip where you've never been is definitely on the top of my list.

7. Travel to Europe

It has always been my dream to travel Europe. Maybe it would be a good graduation gift? *hint, hint*

8. Learn how to cook and bake (better)

A college diet of ramen isn't going to suffice, so I'm starting to experiment making actual meals.

9. Get rid of the negative people in my life

I've learned that if you keep these negative influences around, it'll just hold you back. It's important to break free from these individuals and be happy without them.

10. Branch out and meet new people

There is something special about meeting new people and bonding right away.

11. Have more faith in myself

I have a bad habit of doubting myself and thinking I'm not very good at anything. This year, I need to work on my well-being.

12. Journal

I have one of those minds that runs a mile a minute. I'm constantly thinking and analyzing every detail of what I said or need to say to someone. I've heard journaling is a great way to get your thoughts onto paper and to ease your mind.

13. See my favorite singer or band in concert

My dream would be to see Adele, Justin Timberlake or Backstreet Boys in concert. Who wouldn't want to have a little BSB throwback in their lives?

14. Spend 24 hours without social media

I actually took the 24-hour challenge two years ago, and it was amazing how obsessed we all are with social media. It taught me how important it is to talk face to face with one another and not rely on signing onto Facebook to update my status.

15. Take more pictures

You can never have too many pictures!

16. Splurge on that Kendra Scott necklace I've been eyeing

There's nothing wrong with a splurge here or there. I deserved it.

17. Accomplish a Pinterest project

Pinterest is every girl's one true love. I'll attempt that cake recipe I found one of these days.

18. Eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream in one sitting

Eat an entire pint of ice cream by myself? Why not?

19. Start an exercise routine

Burn off that pint of ice cream by slowly killing yourself by planking.

20. Spend time with family

Family will always be there for you through thick and thin.

21. Live in the moment

I need to learn to get off my phone and just spend good quality time with friends and family.

22. Try something new

I've always thought about taking risks and trying something different. So here's my chance!

23. Nothing feels better than being 23

So here’s to feelin’ 23!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
