The Struggles Of Being Left-Handed

Southpaws don't have it easy.

The Struggles Of Being Left-Handed

We live in a world geared toward righties, even when some of the most influential people in history primarily used their left hand. 10 percent of the general population is left-handed. I am left-handed. Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Mark Zuckerberg were/are all left-handed, and they know my daily struggle all too well.

Here is a list of just a few of the problems all lefties face.

Scissors

Don't be deceived, these are not a tool for arts and crafts. I'm 78 percent sure right-handed scissors are straight up medieval torture devices, and there's no such thing as scissors for lefties. It is IMPOSSIBLE to cut a straight line with them.

Notebooks

If you have bad handwriting in the first place, all of those metal rings in the way are not going to help you. Half of every notebook is impossible to write well in.

Speaking of writing...

The Smudge

Every time.

Every. Single. Time.

You can't write without smudging the entirety of your page into a mess of graphite. I have to wipe my hand off after every sentence. This is probably the worst thing about the lefty life. Being more creative sometimes isn't worth it, all because of the smudge.

Desks

Funny story: It took over 19 years, but this month, I finally saw my first ever left-handed desk.

The difference between them is astounding. I never knew what I was missing, and I'm very close to protesting on Jayhawk Boulevard to be treated equally in this righty dominated world.

If there are any lefties reading, tell me what struggles I missed! I'll see you all on August 13 (National Left Handers' Day).

Going to the gym and working out on a daily basis (with breaks once in awhile) has been a great way for me to feel good about myself. It is 100% more than just looking good. Especially after starting college and having the stress and anxiety of tests, assignments, and just figuring out my future, the gym at my school has definitely been a place of relief for me and I have numerous reasons of why everyone should push themselves to get to the gym when they can.
