Ithaca's Odyssey: Meet Our Writer, Ashley Wolf

Ashley Brilla: Why IC?

Ashley Wolf: I'm a journalism major. They have the Park School which is a great communications school. Also, I'm from Syracuse, about an hour away, so I'm close to home, but not too close that my parents are always stopping to visit every day.

AB: Why did you want to write for Odyssey?

AW: I found Odyssey after I had quit an internship. I didn't want to just be featured in the Ithacan, and I figured this would give me a good mix up. It's journalistic, but it's also relatable.

AB: What is your favorite article you've written?

AW: I covered a wedding back home this summer for a local newspaper. It was a Native American wedding, but it was really cool because the girl was from one tribe and the guy was from another. It was kind of like "Romeo and Juliet."

AB: Least favorite?

AW: During my freshman year internship, I covered a bunch of town meetings and once the mayor of the town started yelling at me because no one had been covering anything for this town. It drew a lot of attention to me.

AB: What is your major and why did you choose it?

AW: I love to write and I have been watching the news since I was a kid. Even so, I'm going into print. I like how we tell people what's going on and share the news.

AB: What is your favorite class you've taken at IC?

AW: Last year I took a class solely on the year 1968 and we learned about Woodstock and the Vietnam War. I'm a huge history buff, so I really liked that.

AB: What is your dream job?

AB: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

AB: What's your favorite thing to do in Ithaca?

AW: I really like going to the Gorges with friends, but because of the weather that doesn't happen too often. I would say just exploring Ithaca.

AB: What is your favorite place to eat at in Ithaca?

AW: I have the most fun at the Ale House because of the atmosphere, but for the best food the Boatyard.

AB: Coffee or Tea

AB: Cats or Dogs?

AB: Night owl or early bird?

AB: What's your favorite book?

AW:

AB: What's your favorite movie?

AB: Favorite TV show?

AW: Always.

AB: If you could have a drink with any famous person dead or alive, who would you pick?

AW: Easy, Beyonce!

AB: What is your cause?

AW: I don't know how to make it happen, but I would say making sure everyone has some sort of shelter.

AB: What is your life motto?

AW: It's my favorite Bible verse, and I think it shows both professionalism and a way to love yourself.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
