Have you ever taken a good look at what you are actually watching?
We owe it to ourselves to not waste the little relaxation time in our busy lives on reality television.
It’s a phenomenon that took off like a Black Friday shopper in Walmart: reality television. Frankly, it needs to go. Hear me out and then you can decide if what you’re watching is worth it.
The Bachelor is a show about a group of women throwing themselves at a guy in hopes of finding true love. Viewers think its romantic. It’s not. You know what is romantic? An Affair to Remember, a classic movie where a guy respects a woman and goes to extraordinary measures to show how much he loves her. How is it romantic that a group of beautiful and intelligent women are disregarding their self-respect and moral judgment on national television in order to possibly win some guy over? Women think this is perfectly fine, but then are distraught when a guy walks all over them. Did you ever think there is a correlation between the two? Maybe guys see that women are engrossed in this show and think, “well, if he can do it, so can I.”
Maybe reality television is lowering women’s standards and self-admiration. Speaking of lowering our standards, how about Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Keep up with what? Their lack of respect for the sanctity of marriage or their outlandish family arguments? I’m not sure if Kim and Kris’s vows were different than everyone else’s, but I’m pretty sure it says “till death do us part” not “till the first 72 days when the honeymoon phase is over.” Aren’t you suppose to be absolutely in love with the person and cannot imagine the rest of your life without them? Call me traditional but marriage is supposed to be a life long commitment, not a publicity stunt.
While Kim isn't the only one lacking respect for marriage in that family, I’d rather touch on the constant arguing that goes on in the show. Coming from someone who wishes they were lucky enough to have siblings, I find it obscene that they find it acceptable to scream and swear at each other followed by not talking to each other for days or even weeks. How old are you? If you cannot stand each other that much, then maybe you shouldn’t have a television show together. Equally as shocking is the fact that Kendall and Kylie get away with being complete brats to their parents on air. Yelling at them, or even better, slamming their door so hard that it echoes throughout their mansion. I’m sure that is the exact behavior parents across the country want their children emulating.
The list goes on about the flaws of reality television, but the point I’m trying to make is we need to drop the reality shows and watch shows with actual meaning. Friends and How I Met Your Mother were just (if not more) entertaining than reality television shows and they had a moral at the end of each episode. When is the last time you learned anything from reality TV or at least didn’t feel like your brain was turning into mush?
