Let's set up this scene: New Year's Eve; you invite all of your girlfriend's over; bags are filled with tacky sparkle make-up and regrettable outfits; hopes of midnight kisses fill the air. Your bathroom becomes a salon filled with unqualified make-up artists and hair stylists. In a matter of hours, you and your friends have perfectly crunchy sparkles covering your eyelids, hair-spray hardened tight curls, and little sequined dresses that will have to be covered by pea coats in order for your parents to let you out of the house. Whether this horrid time of your life happened in middle school, or will haunt you forever from high school, many of us have been there. However, even as we mature there is a difficult line when it comes to adding festive sparkle while remaining classy and respectable.
Although we would all like to wear a stunning glittter dress, and tend to reach for the cheaply made version at Forever 21, most of us will end up stuck in a basement party or at a bar. In our minds, that may be the red carpet. You may be a little overdressed, and that the glitter dress will never be worn again.Â
Here are some helpful tips to lead you in the right direction.Â
Make-up
If you are wearing an outfit that has a lot going on, keep it simple: light shimmer eyeshadow, bold cat eyes (black liquid liner), and blush colored lipstick.
If your outfit is somewhat plain, this is your time to be festive with the make-up: gold smokey eyes (Naked 3 is great for this), cat eyes (black liquid liner), and deep red lipstick.Â
If you want to add a little gold sparkle, the smallest amount bordering your liner will do the trick. I mean it when I say smallest.
Hair
New Year's Eve calls for loose curls, fashionable buns, and straight ponies. While you do not want to overdo the hairstyle -- please, no tight curls ladies -- New Year's Eve is a special holiday, so have some fun and take time with you hair, much like with the make-up.
If your outfit is simple, go for the wild curls. If your outfit has some tasteful sparkle, or you went with the drastic make-up, balance it by pulling your hair back.
The Outfit
Glitter and gold skirts.Â
Pair with a loose fitting sweater, or long sleeve, and make sure the skirt is not too tight.Â
Little black dress. Dress it up with dramatic make-up and statement jewlery. Dress down with booties, Converse and tights.
Casual New Year's Eve. Pepulum shirts and jeans; backless shirts; leather leggings.
New Year's Eve is a time of reflection and celebration, a time to appreciate the past year and welcome in the next. So raise up your glass and bring on the New Year with a little bit of sass and a whole lotta class!Â
