are Tired of Hearing

Whether you have just been accepted to Indiana State University, are in your final year, or even if you graduated 45 long years ago, there are certain phrases that we Sycamores are just so tired of hearing.

1. "Have you met Larry Bird?!"

Larry Bird put Indiana State on the map by carrying the 1979 basketball team to the championship game. After a successful run at Indiana State, Bird then went on to play for the Boston Celtics. He is the the current president of the Indiana Pacers organization. While he does not return to Indiana State regularly, his impact on the campus and the Terre Haute community does not go unnoticed.

2. Comments about the sewer smell

Terre Haute no longer has the distinct sewer smell that once plagued the city. The sewage plant in West Terre Haute fixed the waste treatment plant smell years ago. Since then, the smell has gone away.

3. "Your mascot is a tree."

Our mascot is Sycamore Sam, a woodland creature. And a cute one at that.

4. Train horns

Every 15-30 minutes, students can hear a distinct sound, a sound that has kept them up at night, a sound that shakes windows, a sound that we have come to tune out: the train horn. Terre Haute is the crossroads of America with freight trains coming through what seems like every few minutes. Hey, at least being railroaded is a perfectly acceptable reason to be late to class.

5. "I Screwed Up."

Indiana State University is known throughout Terre Haute high schools as “I Screwed Up.” The school was recently ranked number 30 of “America’s Best Colleges,” beating out both Duke and Yale. The university also has accredited colleges including the Scott College of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, Bayh College of Education, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Technology. Going to State hardly means you screwed up.

While Indiana State students are tired of hearing the phrases and noises above, we could not be more proud to be attending a fantastic college and enjoying the best four years of our lives. The university has wonderful traditions and honors such as the annual Trike and Tandem Race, Homecoming Parade, Spring Week, and being Number One in Community Service. Whether you chose State to stay close to home, received a scholarship, or maybe the campus just felt right to you, you’re proudly yelling, “Go Trees!”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
