Iyanla Vanzant once said “It’s time for you to move, realizing that the thing you are seeking is also seeking you." For these young black women below, fame is what is seeking them. Here is my list for young black women about their business and who are on the rise in their respective field of work.

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson, while 32 years old, does seem to have only just begun to show us what she has to offer Hollywood. Thompson's first feature film appearance was in the 2006 remake of the horror film When a Stranger Calls playing the role of Scarlet. She gained nationwide recognition in 2014, when she starred in Justin Simien's Sundance winner Dear White People. After that, she got other highly acclaimed roles, playing civil rights activist Diane Nash in Ava DuVernay's Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic Selma and in 2015, she appeared in Ryan Coogler's Rocky spin-off-sequel film Creed.

With two lead roles coming up, she is being rightfully thrust into the public eye.

Jessica Williams

(Source: New York Post)

The youngest correspondent ever on the Daily Show, Jessica Williams is a comedic force to be reckoned with. In fact, she was rumored to be offered the job of host of the Daily Show before Trevor Noah took the position. Williams has been on the come up for a little bit of time now.In 2012, she was featured as one of Variety's Top 10 Comics to Watch, and she recurred in the third season of HBO's "Girls." Williams can also be seen in the Sundance comedy "People Places Things" which came out this year. When Williams isn't working on the Daily Show or headlining an upcoming comedy tour in New York, she can be seen advocating heavily for the rights of black people and especially black women on social media.

Zendaya

Zendaya has proven to not only be an extremely talented young woman, but also a large humanitarian. Not only is she an accomplished singer, with her Platinum single “Replay” earned her not only an NAACP Image Awards Nomination for Outstanding New Artist, but she has upgraded from sidekick to main star on a Disney Channel original series. On the humanitarian side, Zendaya has truly lived up to her name. Zendaya means “to give thanks” in Shona, which is a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe. For her 18th birthday Zendaya celebrated by supporting Convoy of Hope’s feedONE initiative to help feed at least 150 hungry children in Haiti, Tanzania and the Philippines for a year. She has also worked with UNICEF, servings as its 2014 Trick-or-Treat spokesperson to help inspire kids to raise funds for the organization’s lifesaving programs. Along with that, she has been able to find time to work with Make-A-Wish Foundation, Keep A Child Alive organization and she was an ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network.

SZA

(Source: The Village Voice)

SZA first began recording music by accident; after recording one song, she continued the process until she decided she should "make something out of it." And make something out of it she has. To this date, she has released three EP's with her debut album "A" coming out soon. SZA is also known for being Top Dog Entertainment's first female signee and first singer, which drew attention during the early stages of her career. With an unconventional, alternative R&B style, SZA is drawing comparisons to one of her influences, Ms. Lauryn Hill. Known for her chill demeanor, SZA can be seen as a positive image for young women to look up to. She wears whatever she wants during performances, even pajamas, so she can give the best singing performance she can. She embodies the idea that young women should just try to be comfortable with who they are.

Maya Moore

(Source: Life and Times)

Maya Moore, a modern day basketball legend, dominates all who she opposes. She led the University of Connecticut to consecutive national college championships as well as a historic 90-game win streak. In her rookie season as a member of the professional WNBA team the Minnesota Lynx, not only did she win the rookie of the year award and get named an all star, but her and her team won the WNBA championship, making her only the second player in league history to accomplish such a feat. She has since won another championship, the MVP award and the Final's MVP. She was also named to the 2012 Olympic team where they won the gold. Currently, she is one of only two women to be named a Jordan Brand athlete. The most impressive out of all of this is she has only been in the league for 4 years. She has already accomplished so much and she has plenty more to give.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
