25 Things Every GVSU Student Should Do This Fall

Classes have started and fall is quickly approaching, which means it’s time to figure out some fun activities to do before winter creeps its way onto campus. Here is a fall bucket list to ensure that you make the best of these next few autumn months and don’t take the colorful scenery or your soon to be frozen surroundings for granted.

  1. Attend Art Prize.

  2. Enjoy delicious cider, donuts and caramel apples from Robinette’s.
  3. Go on a hayride and find your way through a corn maze.
  4. Spend some quality time with your family during Grand Valley’s family weekend.
  5. Go to every GVSU football game and tailgate.

  6. Go on a carriage ride through downtown.
  7. Be brave and visit The Haunt.
  8. Find the perfect Halloween costume and go all out.
  9. Enjoy a pumpkin spice latte from the new Starbucks on campus while you study.
  10. Have a movie marathon with the best Halloween movies ("Halloweentown" and "Hocus Pocus" are a must).
  11. Carve pumpkins with your roommates.

  12. Visit the zoo.
  13. Take a hike through the Ravines.
  14. Play football or study in The Arboretum.
  15. Join a club or organization and get involved on campus.
  16. Explore the breweries that have dubbed GR Beer City, USA.
  17. Go to a Grand Rapids Griffins game.

  18. Check out Halloween on Ionia and try to win the best costume contest.
  19. Take a stroll through the awesome downtown market and Grand Valley’s own Farmers Market.
  20. Attend a concert at either Van Andel Arena or The Intersection.
  21. Participate in the GVSU Homecoming events.
  22. Spend a day exploring the historic museums of Grand Rapids.

  23. Run The 5KRunDead or The Zombie Dash.
  24. Bundle up and watch the sunset at the beach because Lake Michigan is beautiful no matter the season.
  25. Appreciate GVSU’s fall beauty before it becomes a snow globe.

This list is a pretty good start, but there is an abundance of great events that Grand Rapids and Grand Valley have to offer this fall! Both GVSU and Grand Rapids have so much culture and history to explore, and fall is the perfect time to put on a sweater, grab your hot beverage of choice and go exploring before the first snowflakes start to stick.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
