Books For Break

Here are some great books for reading over the holiday season. These are the kinds that you get so immersed in, you feel like you're in another world, and you're completely changed afterwards. They are all very heavy (literally and figuratively).

1. "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck

This book will blow your mind. Basically, you have these two brothers, Adam and Charles, who represent Cain and Abel from the Bible. That's really all I can say, because this is one of those books that feels like it just has everything, and you can never really talk about it to someone who hasn't read it. All you can say is, read it. So, read it.

2. "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving

Read this whether you're religious or not. It's magical. You will absolutely fall in love with Owen Meany as a book and a character.

3. "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov

Definitely the shortest book on this list, you may very well have heard about this book. Perv guy falls in love with his little step-daughter. Read it before you judge. It's not love, but it's beautiful writing and an amazing look into how, in this man's mind, there is nothing wrong with what he's doing. Unreliable narrators!!

4. "Prince of Tides" by Pat Conroy

Read this especially if you grew up in the south (particularly a coastal area). This is another book that has everything. This will hit you hard. Over and over again. You won't be able to put it down. I read it for a class in high school, and we were all so far ahead of the schedule the entire time.

5. "The Magus" by John Fowles.

Just read it. It's absolutely huge, but very worth it. Greek island. Beautiful writing.

6. "Ulysses" by James Joyce

I recommend getting an annotated edition in addition to this book, because otherwise, you will have no clue what is going on. I'm taking an entire class dedicated to this book this semester. It's a rewrite of "The Odyssey" in Dublin.

If you need a distraction, something to pass the time or just another world to exist in for a bit, these books are the answer. If I ever want to get myself out of a slump and look at the world differently, I'd head to my bookshelf and grab one of these.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
