Here in South Florida, we are no strangers to tropical storms or hurricanes that can threaten us, especially during the months of August and September. But recently we have forgotten what really happens when a storm is coming, since the area hasn't experienced a tropical storm since Isaac in 2012 and a significant hurricane since Wilma in 2005. With that kind of time period in mind, cue the long lines for gas and the zoo that becomes Publix as people try to stock up on batteries, food and water in case of emergency.
Floridians are also known for their "hurricane parties", which are held either before or during a storm where lots of alcohol is consumed by all. It creates a sense of camaraderie for neighbors, friends, even strangers who bond simply because a hurricane is coming. So in honor of Tropical Storm Erika, or Hurricane Erika as it may become, let's play a drinking game!
1. Anytime the TV weatherman gives updates on the storm: 3 sips
2. Anytime the news warns you to be prepared: 2 sips
3. Checking if you have to evacuate: 2 sips
4. Waiting in line for gas somewhere: 6 sips
5. Putting up your shutters or plywood: 4 sips
6. Getting cash from the ATM: 2 sips
7. Having to go to Publix to stock up: 8 sips
8. Actually finding everything you need, like batteries or water: 2 shots
9. Going to the liquor store: 3 sips
10. Clearing your storm drains: 5 sips
11. Securing outdoor furniture or doing anything to fix things outside: 5 sips
Once you have everything done, start your hurricane party....the best way to deal with the storm is by having enough alcohol!
