Dear Mom,
I know we are hundreds of miles away from each other, but I want to take this opportunity to tell you all of the things that I rarely get to now that I'm at school.
In high school I never really got the chance to thank you for all of those times you comforted me when I came home upset about that hard test, dramatic friend, or jerky boy. You were always there with the best advice and warmest hugs. I miss walking in the door after a long day of sports practice, and the smells of a home cooked meal filled the entire house. Watching the bachelor and hearing your opinion of every girl that walks out of the limo was always the highlight of my Monday night. Although I have hundreds of closets to borrow clothes from at school, it will never replace our mommy-daughter shopping trips. All the times you would take me to get mani pedis because you just wanted to spend some alone time with me.
Since I have been at school I have learned that it is really the little ways you used to surprise me that makes it so hard not having you here. The times you would do my laundry or clean my room just to be nice. Nothing will make me want to be home with you more than when I am sick. I sit in my dorm room bed just longing for your homemade soups, excessive cough drop supply, and encouraging words that never failed to make me feel 100 times better. I miss the times in the car together when we drove too fast, and played the music a little too loud. You will always be “my person” and I know that I can completely be myself when I am with you. Everything seems easier with you around and I never got the chance to tell you how much I appreciate everything you have done for me.
It’s hard to imagine that from this moment forward I am an independent person, but the thing you need to know is that a girl always needs her mom. Regardless of how busy I get, or how many texts I forget to respond to, I know you will always be there for me in the times when no one else can be. I don’t doubt that you will be there for me at my graduation, my first job, my wedding, and every significant life event in the future just like you have in the past. It’s just sometimes hard to accept that ever since I left for college I won’t be seeing your smiling face every day, or hear your bubbly laugh.
This letter is for you to read whenever you miss me too and want to remember all those great times we had together. You were there for me when I took my very first steps, and have prepared me to take my very first steps into the real world without you hovering over me assuring that I don’t hurt myself. Thank you so much for always saying the right thing at just the right time. I love you and will forever be a mama’s girl.
