1. "Sorry I can't, I have a tournament."

2. Every weekend is a road trip.

3. You've played in so many tournaments that when you finally get a weekend off, you don't really know what to do with yourself.


4. Pulling down your spandex has become a subconscious act.

5. Though you'd never admit it, you used to wear aggressively patterned spandex to practice.

6. And matching knee highs.

7. You judge a team's abilities by their uniforms before they even step onto the court.

8. There is always that one girl on your team who knows how to do every type of braid.

9. No matter how many times you wash them your knee pads, they will forever smell like death.

10. You can't really remember what it feels like not to be sore.

11. Your volleyball thighs have taken away any hope of fitting into your jeans.

12. Nothing is more satisfying than a perfect kill.

13. You cringe when you hear people say spike.

14. Or when you see someone wearing turtle knee pads.

15. You come home from every tournament like…

16. You know THAT volleyball parent all too well.

17. Your prince charming is the guy who will sit through an entire tournament.

18. Your closet consists of stacks of tournament t-shirts, sweat pants and a life time supply of spandex.

19. When girls wear their spandex like…

20. This form hurts your soul.

21. You would sell your soul to never have to line judge again.

22. Your knees will forever look like this:

23. Not getting set is the reason you have trust issues.

24. Your grade school ace cheers used to last longer than the point you were celebrating.

25. Somewhere between the impossible conditioning, never-ending tournaments and every day practices, your team became your family.

…And you wouldn't trade your memories for the world.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
